List of member states in the German Confederation
The list of territories in the German Confederation provides information about the member states of the German Confederation and the respective areas. The largest German federal states Austria and Prussia were each partly outside the federal territory.

The Duchy of Schleswig had been part of an Austro-Prussian condominium since the German-Danish War in 1864 , together with the federal members Holstein and Lauenburg. In the remaining time of the Federation, however, it no longer became a federal member.

Outside the federal government, the following states were in real union or personal union with member states of the federal government:
- Kingdom of Denmark (personal union with Holstein and Lauenburg until 1864)
- United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (personal union with Hanover until 1837)
- Kingdom of the Netherlands (personal union with Luxembourg; from 1839 with Limburg)
- Principality of Neuchâtel (personal union with Prussia, republic in 1848, recognized by the Prussian king in 1857)
- Duchy of Schleswig (Realunion with Holstein), Danish imperial fief until 1864, part of the Prussian-Austrian condominium in 1864
Delimitation to German-speaking areas outside the German Confederation
The following areas with German-speaking parts of the population did not belong to the German Confederation:
