history

The term Wildenburger Land goes back to the former free imperial rule Wildenburg. The lords of Wildenburg , who were descended from the lords of Arenberg and whose seat was Wildenburg , died out in 1418. Thereupon the imperial rule over an heir daughter came to the counts of Hatzfeld . In 1806 Wildenburg fell to the Grand Duchy of Berg , and in 1815 to Prussia . Within Prussia, Wildenburg, together with the former electoral office of Schönstein , formed the state lordship of Wildenburg-Schönstein. The Wildenburger Land has belonged to Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946.

territory

The historical region today forms the northernmost tip of the Altenkirchen district and at the same time of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The largest local community is Friesenhagen . In addition to Friesenhagen, the current local communities of Birken-Honigsessen , Hövels , Katzwinkel and the districts of Wissen north of the Sieg are located on the territory of the historic Wildenburg rulership . The current territorial extent of the Protestant parish of Wissen corresponds to the area of the former rulership of Wildenburg-Schönstein.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Wildenburg shows three red roses on a silver shield. Some regional authorities in the historic Wildenburg region have taken the Wildenburg roses into account when designing their municipal coats of arms.

In the coat of arms of the Altenkirchen district, however, the Wildenburg region is represented by the "Hatzfeldt wall anchor " (black wall anchor in gold).
