Siegerland (natural area)
The Siegerland is a natural area located on both sides of the upper reaches of the Sieg and mainly consists of its catchment area in the southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia and in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate . Its location deviates somewhat to the west from the historic Siegerland after which it is named.
The Siegerland is part of the natural spatial main unit group 33 (= D38) Süderbergland and represents the main unit 331 there.
Location and limits
The Siegerland is located in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and in the extreme (northern) east of the Altenkirchen district . To the east it is enclosed in a semicircle by the western edge of the Rothaargebirge (main unit 333) with the Kindelsberg in the north and the Kalteiche in the south, to the north-west it borders on the southern Sauerland uplands (336 2 ) and to the west on the Mittelieg-Bergland (330). To the south, in the Hohen Westerwald (322), the center of gravity of another main unit group of the Rhenish Slate Mountains , the Westerwald (32), joins.

landscape
The winning country is the source hollows landscape of victory and also western incline of the Rothaar and Northern Slope of the High Westerwald . Through the side valleys of the Sieg tributaries, the area is divided into plumage .
The landscape is cut centrally by the Siegen Basin with the Siegen - Kreuztal agglomeration area on the Sieg and Ferndorfbach valleys . North of the Ferndorfbach, in the so-called Hilchenbacher Winkel , the landscape flows smoothly into the Rothaargebirge. To the south-west of this, the Siegerland Rothaar Vorhöhen , also directly covering the Rothaargebirge, adjoin, which is also called Siegquellbergland, and to the south-west of the Siegtal between Netphen and Deuz .
Between the core Siegerland and the Westerwald as well as the Mittelieg-Bergland in the southwest, the Hellerbergland and Giebelwald push a barrier that the Sieg in the Niederschelden-Betzdorf Siegtal breaks through at around 200 m . Further south, the Heller breaks through this barrier and divides “their” mountainous region into a north and a south part. The latter flows in relief to the south into the High Westerwald and almost reaches its heights.
The Freudenberger Bergland in the west merges into the Morsbacher Bergland to the west and the Oberbigge plateau to the north .
The Siegerland is predominantly forested (especially beech and spruce mixed forest) and only in the valleys is partly used for agriculture.
geology
As part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains , the geologically older parts bear slate , the younger sandstone , which is mostly covered with brown earth .
mountains
The highest mountains of the historic Siegerland are in the western part of the Rothaargebirge, the highest of the natural Siegerland in the western foothills of the southern part of this low mountain range in the Siegerland Rothaar foothills . There are also heights of over 600 m in the southern Hellerbergland , which flows in relief into the High Westerwald .
The mountains and elevations include - with height in meters (m) above mean sea level (NHN):
