The Giebelberg near Niederfischbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Altenkirchen is 527.8  m above sea level. NHN the central and highest elevation of the gable forest on both sides of the border of Rhineland-Palatinate (RP) and North Rhine-Westphalia (NW) . Its summit is in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Geographical location

The Giebelberg is located approximately in the center of the Giebelwald in the southeast of the Niederfischbach district, from which the mountain summit is 2.6 km away; it is about 350 m away from the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. The summit also rises 2.6 km northeast of Freusburg (zu Kirchen ), 2.9 km north-northeast of its locality Struth , 3 km northwest of Mudersbach and 3.5 km west of Niederschelderhütte (Mudersbach), all of which belong to the Altenkirchen ( RP), as well as 4 km west-southwest of Gosenbach , 3.6 km southwest of Oberschelden (both to Siegen ), 3.1 km south of Oberfischbach (local community) and 2.5 km (as the crow flies ) south-southeast of Niederndorf (to Freudenberg ) , all of which belong to the Siegen-Wittgenstein (NW) district. In addition to the district of Niederfischbach (in the northwest; with the mountain summit), those of Kirchen (in the south), Mudersbach (in the southeast) and Freudenberg (in the north) have shares in the mountain. As part of its Westphalian part, the mountain is part of the (historical) Siegerland .

The small Vollmersbach rises southeast of the mountain , which flows into the Sieg near Freusburg , and east-southeast the Schinderbach which flows into the Gosenbach tributary in Niederschelderhütte . A small tributary of the Uebach rises to the east-northeast , which flows into the Fischbach , to the north the Uebach tributary Käsbach and east the small Asdorf tributary Otterbach .

Natural allocation and protected areas

The Giebelberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) and in the main unit Siegerland (331) to the subunit Giebelwald (331.5).

Parts of the Westerwald bird sanctuary (VSG no. 5312-401; 289.48  km² ) and the Giebelwald fauna-flora-habitat area (FFH no. 5113-302; 10.73 ) lie in the Rhineland-Palatinate areas of the Giebelberg km²).

Traffic and walking

The federal road 62 leads southeast past the Giebelberg from the Niederschelderhütte through Mudersbach to Freusburg . Two state roads branch off from this road , on which one can drive around the mountain through some of the places mentioned in the section Geographical location . For example, starting at these roads you can hike the mountain on forest paths and paths. The European long-distance hiking trail E1 leads over the mountain .
