Current

The Obernau rises in the western foothills of the Rothaargebirge in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park . Your source lies southeast of not from this stream , but by the Netphe carrying Netphener district Afholderbach on the southern slope of the transition region of wide mountain ( 629.2  m above sea level.  NHN ) in the east and age castle ( 633  m ) to the west at about 520  m Height.

First of all, the Obernau flows roughly south. After a little more than 650 m of flow, it turns to the southwest. There two tributaries meet the Obernau : A relatively long left tributary, which rises northeast of the Sanktkopf ( 606  m ) and west of the Hohenroth forest house (approx.  637.5 m ), has a few short infiltration stretches  (similar to the stream shrinkage in karst areas ) and then partly in old well sockets, as well as a right tributary that rises on the southeast flank of the mountain Alte Burg.

After about 900 m, the Obernau to reach 394  m altitude, the northeastern total of two predust corners, which at 394  m is high and about 220 m is long, and m is other 600, and inflow of another left-hand and coming from Santa head inflow the Obernautalsperre to 369 , 7  m high. The creek flows out of the dam in a westerly direction and then for about 2.9 km through the Netphener district of Brauersdorf , making a small curve to the southwest and immediately afterwards again to the west, and through the Obernetphen district of Netphen .

In Obernetphen, the Obernau, which flows in its last meters from the northeast - 200 m after passing the market square - flows at about 285  m into the Rhine tributary Sieg, which comes from the southeast .

Before the dam construction

Obernautalsperre

Before the construction of the Obernautalsperre (1967–1972), the Obernau flowed through the Obernau valley with the town of the same name, Obernau , towards Brauersdorf. Obernau was demolished in the course of the dam construction and would now be under water at the end of the dam, in contrast to Nauholz , which would only be partially in the dam area. Originally, the Obernau in the Obernautälchen took up the Burbach (Leybach) on the right and an unnamed tributary on the left, which rises on the western slope of the Sanktkopf mountain. These tributaries, like the largest tributary of the Obernau, the Nauholzbach , flow into the dam today.
