The forester's house Hohenroth is an old and former forester's house in the urban area of Netphen in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Siegen-Wittgenstein . In Rothaargebirge on the western edge of the natural environment Eder-Lahn head back upright, it serves as a guest house ( Café woodland) and Forest Information Center Forsthaus Hohenroth and popular destination. It is also the highest inhabited house in the Siegerland . Sights are for example a deer enclosure , a Kyrillpfad and a soil nature trail .

Geographical location

The forester's house is located in the south of the Rothaargebirge near the Eisenstrasse of the Rothaargebirge , which is part of the state road  722, as well as directly on a former coal road that crosses the Eisenstrasse there. In the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park , it is located in the Obernau district, right on the border with the Nauholz district, between a 638.7  m high point in the east and 637.2  m above sea level. NHN high point in the west a little below the 637.5 m height line visible on the German basemap . The landscape at the forester's house is characterized by forest.

The nearest towns are about 4 to 5 kilometers (km; each as the crow flies ) away. These are Lützel , about 4 km northwest, Walpersdorf , 3.5 km southeast, Benfe , about 2.9 km east-southeast and Sohlbach , about 2.8 km northwest. Benfe is the only one of the four named villages that does not belong to Netphen or Hilchenbach , but to Erndtebrück .

The rivers Benfe in the east, Nauholzbach in the south-south-east, Obernau in the west and Netphe in the north-west arise near the forester's house ; in the vicinity are the Eder spring , the Sieg spring and the Lahn spring when viewed in a north-west-south-east direction . A few kilometers north-north-west is the Gillerturm observation tower , and to the west is the Alte Burg Wallburg .

The geographical center of the Siegen-Wittgenstein district is located about 1150 m northeast of the forester's house on the upper reaches of the Eder near the source .

climate

The climate is harsh and relatively cool due to the altitude above sea level. Temperatures barely rise above 25 ° C in summer, whereas temperatures below −20 ° C are not uncommon in the winter months. The winter can last up to half a year. With an average of 1,350 mm of precipitation and almost 200 foggy days per year, the climate is very rainy, which made the work of the foresters very difficult at the time. According to ancient information and legends, there used to be summer days when it was foggy all day, and very hard winters with −30 ° C and more than a meter of snow.

history

In 1854 the forester's house was mentioned (at that time a forester's house - Königliche Revierförsterei - with stable building was built), before it was converted into a new forester's house in 1910 due to dilapidation. Although the forester's lodge, which was located in the forest, was difficult to reach, it was still a popular place from 1930 to 1970 because it operated a small restaurant. Traders, carters, woodcutters and travelers all stopped there. Hohenroth only got a power connection in 1946. To date (2014) eight forest ranger families got to know the Hohenroth forest house.

Today the old forester's house is used as a "forest information center". It is supported by the “Waldland Hohenroth” association and the Hilchenbach Forestry Office . The visitors are presented with a lot of information about clearing of wood and about nature in changing exhibitions. Right next door is the “Café Waldland”, where you can also spend the night.

Deer enclosure

The red deer enclosure was built in 2005 by the Siegen-Wittgenstein Regional Forestry Office . In autumn 2005 13 female and 3 male animals of different origins were purchased. Since then, the stock has changed from year to year, as purchases and sales have to be made for the purpose of refreshing blood. In addition to the red deer, some representatives of the rare Mesopotamian fallow deer have been living in the enclosure since 2011.

The enclosure is about 50 hectares in size, surrounded by a 2.8 km long fence and is at 620 and 650  m altitude. For visitors, a barrier-free viewing platform was built near the forester's house, which should give the opportunity to observe the animals. Since the source of the Netphe is located in the enclosure, the animals always have enough water.

Cyril Path

The Kyrillpfad lies on average about 1050 m east-northeast of the forester's house. After Hurricane Kyrill , a forest area of around 2.5 hectares was not reforested and fallen trees were left behind. A path was cut through it and provided with small steps, information boards and small boards with sayings by well-known authors and a viewing platform.

Soil nature trail

The soil nature trail is an approximately 5 km long circular route around the Hohenroth forest house. It was created in collaboration between the State Geological Service of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Siegen-Wittgenstein Regional Forestry Office . Representative soils of the region that have been exposed through excavations are shown along the path and vividly explained using display boards.
