The Lahnquelle in Lahnhof , a district of Netphen in North Rhine-Westphalia Siegen-Wittgenstein , is in the Rothaargebirge preferred source of the 245.6 km long river Lahn , of the Rhineland-Palatinate Niederlahnstein in the Rhine flows. geography

location

The source of the Lahn is located in Westphalia in the historic Siegerland in the southern part of the Rothaar Mountains on the main ridge of the Ederkopf-Lahnkopf-Ridge nature reserve in the Sauerland-Rothaar Mountains Nature Park . It is located at about 603  m above sea level. NHN , 480 m southwest of the 624.9  m high Lahnkopf and 420 m northeast of the 640.9  m towering Stiegelburg in Lahnhof , a loose collection of three courtyards in a meadow-covered height clearing less than a quarter square kilometer, the district of the Nenkersdorf district of Netphen is. The state border to the Hessian Lahn-Dill district runs 2.2 km southeast .

Watersheds and neighboring springs

Near the source of the Lahn, the watershed between Lahn and Sieg branches off to the southwest from the large Rhine-Weser watershed , which runs roughly in a west-east direction ; The Siegquelle is only about 3 km north of the source , and the Sieg initially flows to the southwest. In addition, about 5.5 km north-northwest of the source - beyond the Sieg - the main hydrological branch Eder of the Weser source river Fulda, which first runs to the north-northwest. The Lahn itself flows on its first section to the northeast and then begins its first large right-hand bend, which at the end of the east leads to the Rhine.

Natural allocation

The Lahn spring belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Dill-Lahn-Eder source area (333.0) to the natural area Ederkopf-Lahnkopf-Ridge (333.01).

Protected areas

The source of the Lahn is located in the landscape protection area of the municipality of Netphen ( CDDA no. 555558489; designated 1985; 117.4529  km² in size). The fauna-flora-habitat area Rothaarkamm and Wiesentäler extends east of the source region (FFH No. 5015-301; 34.46 km²).

history

Source location

For a long time it was unclear what the actual source of the Lahn is - the former extinguishing water pond and current Lahntopf , a source in the basement of the Lahnquelle forester's house or the Lahnhof's house well called Börnchen . It turned out that the alleged source in the forester's cellar is only fed with groundwater through a drainage pipe. It is now believed that the the Lahn pot identified Lahn origin feeds from seven underground inlets. It is not entirely clear what type of source the source is. It could possibly be a shift source.

Renaturation 2013

In 2013 the source of the Lahn was renatured as part of the QuellenReich project in the Rothaar Mountains . The drainage from the spring pot was exposed over a length of 310 m, the young Lahn now moves eastward to the edge of the Lahnhof clearing in an open ditch through pastureland, which is cordoned off by fences. In addition, on the way around the Lahntopf, the bridge over the outlet of the spring (see 2nd picture from above) was replaced with stepping stones in the stream bed and serving as a transition (see bottom picture).

Say about the giant

Giants once lived at the source of the Lahn . The only ones who dared to defy them were Count von Wittgenstein and his little daughter. One day when she was at the water and thought deeply about her brother, who was in the distance, she was captured by the evil giant Geon. When the count heard of this, he immediately set off with an armed entourage, and defeated Geon in a long battle. To this day Geon lives on as a "long man" in the vernacular.

Traffic and walking

Directly past the source of the Lahn, as part of the state road 722 ( Lützel –Lahnhof– Hainchen ), a section of the iron road of the Rothaargebirge leads first of all the Eder and then the Sieg source and runs directly west of the Lahntopf at a height of 605.6  m . The Rothaarsteig and European long-distance hiking trail E1 run parallel to this road - also past the source . You can also go around the Lahntopf on a short path . Otherwise, there are many paths in the area around the source (including to the Stiegelburg and down into the Lahn valley), but they don't start directly from the source, but start a few hundred meters away.
