The Giller tower (also Gillerbergstraße tower and observation tower Gillerbergstraße called) at Luetzel in Westphalia North Rhine- Siegen-Wittgenstein is a 15 m high, protected observation tower on the mountain Giller in Rothaargebirge .

Geographical location

The Gillerturm is located in the southern part of the Rothaar Mountains and the Sauerland-Rothaar Mountains Nature Park . He stands in the clearing from the summit area of 653.5  m above sea level. NHN high Gillers, which rises near the village of Lützel , a south-eastern district of Hilchenbach . It is located 700 m (as the crow flies) northwest of the town center of Lützel, 1.8 km east of Grund and 2.5 km southeast of Vormwald . In the vicinity are the Ginsburg and the Ginsberger Heide with the Rothaarkamm nature reserve and the meadow valleys .

history

The Gillerturm was built in 1892 by the Sauerland Mountain Association Department Hilchenbach e. V. erected in 1892 in steel framework construction. The tower was manufactured by the Heinrich Stähler company from Weidenau an der Sieg. A metal spiral staircase leads with 36 steps to the intermediate platform halfway up the tower and another 36 steps to the upper viewing platform.

The Gillerturm was renovated in 1992, 2003 to 2004 and from June to August 2014. During the latter renovation, it was repainted and the information board with the distance information was brought into shape. In addition, some new railings were installed for the safety of visitors.

Possibility of viewing

Large parts of the Sieger , Sauer and Wittgensteiner Lands can be overlooked from the viewing platform of the 15 m high Gillerturm at a height of 668  m . When the weather is particularly clear, the view extends as far as the Great Ölberg in the Siebengebirge and the Great Feldberg in the Taunus . Some near and far sighting targets are noted on a distance board on the platform.

Traffic and walking

The Gillerturm can be reached directly south of Lützel by turning off the federal road 62 and driving through the village on the Gillerbergstraße slightly uphill from the Giller car park, located just above the village at about 637  m above sea level, after about 200 m with a slight ascent on the Rothaarsteig , the There the route shares with the A4 hiking trail . At the base of the tower there is a picnic area with benches and tables.
