Wilhelm Leffers

Wilhelm Leffers (born March 26, 1871 in Steinbild, † April 25, 1952 in Altglashütten ) was a Catholic pastor and was persecuted during the Nazi era .

Wilhelm Leffers was ordained a priest in Osnabrück on September 16, 1894 and initially worked as a chaplain in Ankum . In April 1902 he was sent to Rostock to oversee the construction of the first large Catholic church. The Christ Church on Rostock's Schröderplatz was consecrated on October 24, 1909. Wilhelm Leffers initiated the establishment of the Catholic hospital “St. Georg ”in 1914.

With the establishment of the children's and infant home “St. Josef “to improve the poor social and religious situation of Catholic children in Rostock, including many Polish children. In 1918 the house was Augustenstr. 85 bought and on January 29, 1918 the first children moved in. The establishment of a Catholic elementary school also fell during Wilhelm Leffer's term of office. On October 8, 1929, the first 159 children started school in Lindenstrasse, in 1930 there were already 221.

Because of his services to the later founding of churches in Güstrow , Tessin , Marlow and Warnemünde , he was appointed secret chamberlain by the Pope . Wilhelm Leffers was denounced, arrested and imprisoned in the Dreibergen penitentiary in Bützow as early as the first years of National Socialism . Back in freedom and in Rostock he was arrested again in 1940. He had to be released because of his poor health. But Leffers had to leave Mecklenburg and went to Altglashütten in the Black Forest. Here he continued to work as a pastor. He died on May 25, 1952. In 1956, according to his wishes, his body was reburied in Rostock.

In the Rostock district of Brinckmansdorf a street was named after Wilhelm Leffers.
