Location of Herkersdorf in Rhineland-Palatinate

Herkersdorf is a district and a district of the city of Kirchen (Sieg) in the district of Altenkirchen (Westerwald) in northern Rhineland-Palatinate on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia . Until 1969, Herkersdorf was an independent municipality.

geography

Herkersdorf is located at the foot of the Druidenstein , a legendary basalt cone at an altitude of 457 m, known far beyond the state's borders , in a quiet, wooded, picturesque landscape of the Westerwald and Siegerland , between Sieg and Heller . The village itself is 330 m above sea level.

history

According to old traditions, Celtic priests are said to have built a place of worship on the Druid Stone in pre-Christian times. The Germanic goddess Herka may have been worshiped at this sacrificial site, which can be linked to the current place name Herkersdorf (Herka).

The Ottoturm has stood on a ridge opposite the Druidenstein since 1911 (renovation 2010).

On June 7, 1969, the previously independent community of Herkersdorf, with 497 inhabitants at the time, was incorporated into Kirchen (Sieg).

politics

Herkersdorf - together with Offhausen - has been designated as a local district of the city of Kirchen (Sieg) since 2019 and has a local advisory board and an honorary mayor .

On December 12, 2018, the Churches City Council decided to unite the two previous districts of Herkersdorf and Offhausen into one local district after the 2019 local elections. Both local councils had previously unanimously approved the merger.

Since the merger, the local council has consisted of nine local council members. In the local elections on May 26, 2019 , these advisory board members were elected by majority vote. The former local advisory council of the independent Herkersdorf district, which existed until 2019, had seven advisory council members.

The mayor is Gerd Schmidt (CDU). In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected with a vote of 80.03% in the merged new local district. He was previously mayor of Herkersdorf.

Culture

Herkersdorf is characterized by an extensive network of clubs and craftsmen. The Herkersdorfer Carnevals Club (HCC) is known beyond the country's borders. For example, the existing dance groups in the club have already won national trophies. In the 1950s, the place was known for its historical open-air plays, with the income from which the construction of the Holy Cross Church was made possible.
