Looz-Corswarem
Looz-Corswarem is the name of a Belgian noble family who belong to the high nobility .
history
Gilbert Graf von Looz (French: Looz , German: Grafschaft Loon ) appears in documents from 1016 and 1034; he already owned Corswarem. Arnold Graf von Looz, a son of Count Rudolph von Looz, is mentioned in documents from 1092 and 1107. His eldest son Arnold donated the older line of the Counts of Looz / Loon, which, however, went out with Count Dieterich II in 1367, whereupon the Bishopric Liège withdrew the county as a settled fiefdom .
Johann, the second son of the older Count Arnold von Looz, received the rule of Corswarem from his father's possessions; he was lord of Ghoer, Nandrin , Fresin and Corswarem; the family still exists today. Around the middle of the 13th century, the Counts of Looz acquired the county of Nyel not far from Maastricht by marrying the heir to the last Duke of Nyel .
1734 recognized Emperor Karl VI. the Corswarem line was given the title of duke in view of their descent from the Counts of Loon, who were directly under the Empire .
As of 1803, there was Duke Wilhelm Joseph von Looz-Corswarem in Rheine on the newly formed for him Principality Rheina-Wolbeck . He received the principality as compensation for the territories he had lost in the Austrian Netherlands during the French Revolution . His successor in Rheine was Joseph Arnold von Looz-Corswarem . As early as 1806, the principality lost its independence under constitutional law, but the former Bentlage monastery and all domain estates remained in the possession of the family, with whom they remained until 1946. The sex exists to this day in two lines: the older, ducal line in France, whose head the title duke and whose agnates carry the title prince / princess, and the younger, counts line in Belgium and Germany.
