Reuss-Schleiz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Reuss-Schleiz is a branch of the younger branch of the Counts (as of August 26, 1673), sovereign on April 9, 1806 Prince Reuss called whose headquarters the rule Schleiz was. This name of the branch is recommended for better clarity even for the time after the establishment of the Principality of Reuss Younger Line in 1848, which took place under the reign of the Schleizer branch and which involved a change of residence to Gera . The designation of the family as Reuss-Gera , which is sometimes used for this period, is prohibited because the branch of the younger line of the same name had already died out in 1802.

The Schleiz reign

The rulership in East Thuringia became independent with the division of the Reussians into younger, middle and older lines. It fell to the younger line . After it belonged to the middle line from 1596 to 1616 , it finally came to the younger line, where it stayed with the Schleizer branch named after it.

Schleiz was the residence of this branch of the younger line until the middle of the 19th century. In 1848 the Reuss-Ebersdorf territories , which since 1824 had also included the Lobenstein areas, fell to the Schleizer line, which, since Schleiz, Lobenstein and Ebersdorf inherited the Gera line in 1802, now all areas of the younger line in one hand held and consequently founded the Principality of Reuss Younger Line in 1848. With the rise of Gera to an important industrial and trading town in the 19th century, the importance of Schleiz decreased more and more, so that in 1848 Gera became the residence of the newly created principality Reuss younger line instead of Schleiz.
