Tourism in Thailand
The tourism in Thailand is an important economic factor in Thailand . The largest share of tourism is made up of visitors from Asian countries, the share of tourists from eastern industrial nations (Asia, Australia) is around 35–40%. Information and studies are provided by the Tourism Authority of Thailand , which also has international offices (e.g. in Frankfurt am Main ). In the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 of the World Economic Forum, Thailand ranks 34th out of 136 countries.
Tourism experienced a strong growth in the 1970s due to soldiers from the US armed forces deployed in the Vietnam War who were looking for relaxation in Thailand (rest & recuperation) . This was also the beginning of sex tourism in Thailand, which has been declining again since the 1980s (today prostitution is mainly present in Pattaya ). The main tourist destinations are the coasts as well as Bangkok and the mountainous north-west of the country . Recreational trips on the beach, round trips, cultural trips and active trips are popular. There are numerous diving areas off and on the coasts that attract additional tourists.
Since then the growth of this branch of the economy has been predominantly increasing. In 2014, 24.8 million international guests traveled to Thailand, with an average length of stay of 9.2 days. 32.5 million vacationers came to Thailand in 2016. In the same year, international tourism revenue was $ 52.5 billion.
