Dirk Elbers (born December 11, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2008 to 2014 he was Lord Mayor of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf.

At 17, Dirk Elbers became a CDU member. From 1996 to 2008 he was a member of the Düsseldorf City Council. In 2001 he became a member of the district board of the CDU Düsseldorf, from 2002 to 2008 he was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the city council of Düsseldorf. In 2004 he was elected first mayor.

In 1996 Elbers came as a successor to the city council of Düsseldorf. In 1999 he was regularly elected, where he was chairman of the committee for business development, tourism, real estate and a full member of the committee for planning and urban development. The city of Düsseldorf represented Elbers in 2004 until he was elected mayor as chairman of the supervisory board of the municipal holding Industrieterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG (IDR).

Lord Mayor 2008

After the death of Lord Mayor Joachim Erwin (CDU), who died in office, Elbers was nominated as a candidate on June 2, 2008 by the CDU district executive. He won the election on August 31, 2008 in the first ballot with 59.7% of the vote in front of his opponent Karin Kortmann ( SPD ). The turnout was around 38%. Elbers is the first Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf to be elected for a six-year term.

During his term of office, the new planning and partial realization of the inner city area around the Kö-Bogen , the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 , but also the closure of the NRW forum after the withdrawal of the NRW state government as a partner. Elbers continued to exempt his predecessor from having to pay for the day-care centers and launched the “Renovation makes school” program. The freedom from debt after the sale of RWE shares was questioned by the opposition and the taxpayers' association . Elbers rejected the Kommunalsoli , a solidarity levy for the benefit of weaker municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, in 2013.

Investigations into the suspicion of taking advantage in the office after accepting 18 bottles of champagne (total value approx. € 750) from the municipal Industrieterrains Düsseldorf-Reisholz AG were discontinued in July 2013 for a monetary requirement of € 10,000.

Mayor election 2014

On June 15, 2013 Elbers was nominated by the CDU district executive as a candidate for the mayor election the following year. As an opposing candidate, Thomas Geisel ran for the SPD . The Düsseldorfer Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen had nominated Miriam Koch (Managing Director of the Green Council Group in Düsseldorf) as a candidate. None of the three top candidates achieved an absolute majority. The official result of the election on May 25, 2014 was: Dirk Elbers 46.1%, Thomas Geisel 37.8%, Miriam Koch 9.2%.

On June 15, 2014 there was therefore a runoff between Elbers (CDU) and Geisel (SPD), which Elbers lost with 79,903 (40.8%) votes to Geisel 115,923 (59.2%) votes.

criticism

The taxpayers' association of North Rhine-Westphalia sharply criticized the decision of the Düsseldorf city council to recognize the former mayor a lifelong pension of 4200 euros gross per month.

Private

Elbers studied business administration and worked full-time as the real estate manager of Count von Spee at Schloss Heltorf before his election as mayor of Düsseldorf . Since his election as Mayor of Düsseldorf, he has been working as a real estate agent. Elbers is Roman Catholic , married to the lawyer Astrid Elbers and lives in Düsseldorf.
