Klaus Bungert
Klaus Bungert (born February 18, 1926 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † November 24, 2006 in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth ) was a German local politician .
Live and act
The trained union secretary and original head of department at the DGB was from 1974 to 1979 and from 1984 to 1994 for the SPD mayor of the state capital Düsseldorf .
His second term of office began with a peculiarity: after the election in the city council between him and his successor and predecessor Josef Kürten had led to a stalemate , the election was decided by lot .
Bungert's name is associated with the construction of the Rhine bank tunnel .
Because of his efforts to establish a town twinning between Düsseldorf and Chemnitz , he was made honorary citizenship of Chemnitz in 1991 and Reading in 1994 . Since 1978 he has been awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany, since 1986 of the Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia and since 1994 of the Japanese Order of the Holy Treasure . In 1989 he received the Jan Wellem Ring from the City of Düsseldorf, and in 1991 the Council awarded him the Great Ring of Honor for special merits . In 1999 he was appointed Honorary Mayor of the state capital.
In 2002 Bungert resigned from the SPD in protest against the government policy of Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .
Klaus Bungert was for many years a member of the board of the tenants' association Düsseldorf eV, from 2003 until his death he was the first chairman. He was also deputy chairman of the German Tenants' Association in North Rhine-Westphalia and on the advisory board of the umbrella organization Deutscher Mieterbund eV (DMB) in Berlin.
After a long illness he died of cancer . On March 26, 2008, a street in Düsseldorf Airport City was named after him.
