A union secretary is a full-time official of a trade union .

Job profile

In addition to the works councils , he or she organizes the working life of the union members with regard to collectively agreed benefits such as remuneration, working hours, vacation, etc. Furthermore, advice and judicial support in labor law disputes with the employer play a major role.

Since there is no training in the traditional sense, the approaches to this profession are different. Prior training in accordance with BBiG , a university degree and / or a degree from the European Academy of Labor are general requirements. In addition, prior (voluntary) engagement in the political and / or social area is often decisive for a successful application.

Training on the job

Almost all major trade unions in Germany offer a trainee program to prepare for the niche job of trade union secretary. The time frame for this ranges from a few months to a year ( IG Metall ) or even one and a half years ( IG BCE ). The content varies from union to union, but for all of them an intensive study of labor law takes up a large part of the time, as well as getting to know the structures and work on site is a central part of the training. In addition, various methods are used to improve individual rhetoric , to prepare for collective bargaining through targeted negotiation training , etc. so that the work of the union secretary can be carried out on behalf of the union members.
