Helmut Otto (doctor)

Gustav Matthieu Helmut Otto (born March 15, 1892 in Antwerp , † June 23, 1974 in Waldbröl ) was a German doctor and lawyer. He held the office of Lord Mayor of Solingen and Düsseldorf .

Life

Otto attended the general school in Antwerp. After he had finished his school career at the Realgymnasium, he completed a degree in agricultural sciences at the universities of Halle , Berlin , Leipzig and Bonn from 1910 . After that, he began studying medicine . From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier. After that Otto belonged to a free corps until 1921 . In May 1920 Otto received his doctorate. med. From the beginning of January 1921 to April 1922 Otto worked as an assistant doctor and then until 1933 as a general practitioner in Solingen . He passed his examination to become a qualified farmer in 1933. He then studied political science and law at the universities of Leipzig and Bonn. In December 1935 he received his doctorate in law from the Dr. jur.

At the beginning of February 1931 he joined the NSDAP and became a doctor with the SA . In 1931 Otto switched from the SA to the SS , of which he was a member until 1938. At the beginning of December 1932 he was promoted to the district leader of Solingen and worked as a Gauredner. In 1933 Otto led the NSDAP parliamentary group of Solingen city councilors. From March 1933 he was a member of the Rhenish Provincial Parliament . On April 3, 1933 Otto became mayor of Solingen. On September 8, 1937, he was appointed (provisionally) Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf. In 1939 he started a long military exercise and never returned to his post.

After the outbreak of World War II , Otto became Reich Commissioner for Warsaw in German-occupied Poland . From mid-June 1940-1944 was Otto Chief Medical doctor of the Wehrmacht in Brussels and then to early May 1945 in Hamburg Medical Corps .

After the end of the war Otto was interned by the Allies and from there he was transferred to Poland in October 1946 . In March 1948 Otto was transferred back to Germany. In July 1948 Otto was denazified as a minor offender . This judgment was held two years later, even after an appeal hearing.
