Karin Kortmann (born June 23, 1959 in Daun ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2005 to 2009 she was Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development .

Life and work

After qualifying for a university of applied sciences in 1980, Karin Kortmann completed a degree in social pedagogy at the (Roman) Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Mainz , which she graduated in 1984 with a degree in social education. From 1985 to 1988 she then headed the specialist office for young workers in the Roman Catholic diocese of Limburg . From 1988 to 1991 she was the full-time diocesan chairwoman of the Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ) in the Diocese of Limburg and from 1990 to 1997 she was the full-time BDKJ federal chairwoman based in Düsseldorf . Since 2011 she has been the full-time Deputy General Secretary of CARE Germany-Luxembourg . During her time at CARE, she was traded as a possible board member of the German Society for International Cooperation . She has been employed at the same company since November 2012, but not as a board member.

Karin Kortmann is married to Hans Hobelsberger , the rector of the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia, and has two children.

Political party

She has been a member of the SPD since 1982. From 2005 to 2006 she was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia.

From 2003 to 2005 she was a member of the board of the SPD Düsseldorf. On March 24, 2007, she was elected chairwoman of the SPD sub-district of Düsseldorf. She is the deputy chairwoman of the "One World Forum" of the SPD party executive and head of the "One World Forum" of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1995 to 1997 she was a member of the old-age pension commission of the SPD party executive and from 1991 to 1997 a member of the youth policy commission of the SPD party executive.

MPs

From 1998 to 2009 Karin Kortmann was a member of the German Bundestag . For the SPD parliamentary group she was from 1999 to 2002 spokeswoman in the study commission “Future of Civic Engagement” and from 2002 to 2005 for “Economic Cooperation and Development”. She was also a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee.

Karin Kortmann entered the Bundestag in 1998 via the state list and since 2002 as a directly elected member of the Düsseldorf II constituency . In the 2005 Bundestag election , she received 45.9% of the first votes . In the 2009 Bundestag election she failed with her direct and list candidacy and is no longer a member of the 17th German Bundestag.

Public offices

On November 22, 2005, she was appointed parliamentary state secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in the federal government ( Merkel I cabinet ) led by Chancellor Angela Merkel . After the federal election in 2009 and the subsequent change of government, Kortmann left office in October 2009.

After the death of the previous mayor of Düsseldorf , Joachim Erwin , she announced her candidacy for the upcoming election as his successor on June 5, 2008. On June 21, she was nominated as a joint candidate by the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. In the election of the new mayor on August 31, 2008, however, she was defeated by her opposing candidate Dirk Elbers with 35.7 to 59.7 percent.

On November 20, 2009 Karin Kortmann was elected Vice President of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) , to which she is an elected individual. She works in various development organizations. Since January 2015 she has been a member of the board of trustees of the German non-governmental organization Don Bosco Mondo eV
