Artistic creation

Carnival floats

The carnival floats from Jacques Tilly's workshop are characterized by a particularly snappy, satirical nature, which primarily addresses current socio-political developments. These carnival floats have given the Düsseldorf Rose Monday procession increased national and international attention. Many of his cars and designs have sparked loud protests. The chronicle of the controversial motif wagons from Düsseldorf is long:

  • 1994 a naked Chancellor Kohl: After a CDU lawyer from Bonn threatened with an injunction, a figure had to be rebuilt that portrayed the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl as a naked jungle Indian.
  • 1996 Crucifix car: A nationwide wave of protests stopped the construction of a political car that targeted the reaction of Bavarian politicians to a Federal Constitutional Court ruling.
  • 1997 Bust war: When the “bust ban” pronounced by the Cologne umbrella organization of carnivalists was mocked during the carnival, a “bust war” broke out between Cologne and Düsseldorf.
  • 2000 Runoff election: A car that featured Marlies Smeets, Düsseldorf's SPD mayor, who was defeated in a runoff election, could not be realized after protests. Since this incident, Tilly has kept all of Düsseldorf's political cars secret until the Rose Monday procession, making use of the freedom of fools . As of 2018 , some will only be completed in the very last few hours.
  • 2005 Cardinal Meisner : A car that satirically portrayed Cardinal Meisner's stance on abortion provoked strong protests from Catholic organizations.
  • 2007 Suicide bomber: The Central Council of Muslims strongly criticized a car that made fun of Islamist suicide bombers.
  • 2009 Skinhead Rüttgers: A car in which the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Rüttgers hit the homeless aid as a skinhead, led directly to the cancellation of the homeless aid by the state government.
  • 2009 Pope car: Cardinal Meisner criticized the car on which Pope Benedict shook hands with the devil in the form of Richard Williamson, who was labeled “anti-Semitism” : “It is my concern not to leave this unchallenged. The presentation is not only wrong, it is also hurtful. "
  • 2015 Charlie Hebdo wagon: In contrast to other more cautious cities, the Düsseldorf carnivalists had four Jacques Tilly wagons drive to the Islamist terror in order to defend the freedom of fools. The TV news from ARD and ZDF reported about the Rosenmontagszug especially as a political event and not just as a custom.
  • 2016 Jarosław Kaczyński car on which Kaczyński, in military uniform, placed his foot on the head of the Polish woman kneeling in front of him. Next to him was a radio labeled Radio Maryja .

In addition to the political wagons, Jacques Tilly and his team build dozens of stately and advertising wagons for Düsseldorf and other cities such as Aachen, Krefeld, Hilden and Ratingen every year. In addition, carnival-like stage decorations are created in his workshop, including for the television session of the Düsseldorf Carnival .

Large sculptures

Jacques Tilly's team also takes on commissioned work during the carnival-free period. With the large-scale sculptures, such as for the World Youth Day Cologne 2005 , the G20 summit in Hamburg 2017 or the Brexit , the artist and his team repeatedly take a stand on political and ideological issues.
