For the election of the successor, ex-foreign minister and LDP general secretary Tarō Asō is favored.

- Los Angeles / United States : There was a rare German success at the MTV Video Music Awards . At this year's award ceremony, Tokio Hotel wins the Best New Artist category.
- Washington, DC / United States : The US government takes control of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage lenders to prevent the 2007 financial crisis from worsening . Fannie and Freddie have a combined loan of 5.3 trillion. US dollars, which is nearly half of all US mortgage loans.

- Havana / Cuba : Hurricane Ike hits Cuba. He had previously claimed 58 lives in Haiti . There is a threat of famine there after four hurricanes hit the country since mid-August 2008, killing over 300 people.
- Moscow / Russia : At a meeting between French President Nicolas Sarkozy as EU Council President and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev , Russia announced the withdrawal of its troops from the heartland of Georgia within a month. However, Russian peacekeeping troops should remain in South Ossetia and Abkhazia . ( see Caucasus conflict 2008 )
- Beijing / China : A mudslide in the Chinese province of Shanxi kills at least 151, and further victims are feared. The trigger was a dam breach in a storage basin of an illegally operated iron ore mine .
- Warsaw / Poland : A now 45-year-old is said to have held his now 21-year-old daughter captive for a number of years, abused and fathered two children with her. The incest case is reminiscent of the Austrian Josef Fritzl case in 2008.

- Bonn / Germany : After customer protests and massive pressure from politics, Deutsche Bahn waived the counter fee when buying tickets.
- Chatsworth / United States : 25 people die and at least 135 others are injured in the collision of a suburban train with a freight train near Los Angeles .
- Vienna / Austria : In the middle of the election campaign , the Austrian National Council decided in its last meeting before the new elections on September 28, with changing majorities, some measures against inflation as well as a short-term bill that changes in the EU treaty would be subject to a referendum in the future. Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik ( ÖVP ) strongly criticizes this decision by the FPÖ and the still-government partner SPÖ and accuses the new SP top candidate Werner Faymann of populism. Vice Chancellor Wilhelm Molterer (ÖVP) and EU Commissioner Vladimír Špidla (SP, Czech Republic) oppose the two parties' plan to reduce VAT on food from ten to five percent. This is contrary to the applicable EU law.

Somchai was elected with the 63 percent parliamentary majority of the governing coalition in which the People's Party (successor to the Thaksin party TTT, which was banned by the military) dominates. The opposition People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) had forced the government through sustained demonstrations to move from the seat of government to the old Don Muang airport in Bangkok. Somchai wants to help resolve the crisis; people are tired of constant arguments.
- Israel : The party members elect Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni to succeed Kadima party leader Ehud Olmert , who narrowly beats her rival, Transport Minister Schaul Mofas .
- Sanaa / Yemen : 16 people died in an attack on the US embassy in Yemen. The next day, 25 suspects were arrested who had declared al-Qaeda .

- Munich / Germany : In the state elections in Bavaria in 2008 , the CSU lost almost a quarter of its votes, while the FDP and the Free Voters moved back into the state parliament with eight and ten percent of the vote, respectively. Because of the loss of its absolute majority, the CSU must now look for a coalition partner. It is rumored that party leader Huber will resign soon.
- Potsdam / Germany : In the local elections in Brandenburg in 2008 , the SPD and Die Linke achieved more votes than the CDU , which won the last local elections in 2003.
- Vienna / Austria : In the national elections in Austria in 2008, the governing parties SPÖ and ÖVP suffer historic losses and drop to 29% and 26% of the vote, respectively, while the right-wing parties FPÖ and BZÖ together achieve 29%. - Wiesbaden / Germany : In a trial vote in the Hessian state parliament , Andrea Ypsilanti ( SPD ) receives 56 votes from MPs from the SPD, the Greens and the Left . The SPD previously excluded a coalition with the parliamentary group of the Left, but Ypsilanti needs more votes than those of the SPD and the Greens in order to achieve the majority approval of the MPs. She sees the outcome of the trial vote as a signal that she will be able to stand for election as prime minister in November .
