Yves Rossy (born August 27, 1959 in Neuchâtel , also known as Jetman ) is a Swiss pilot and inventor .

Rossy first studied engineering and then was a professional pilot in the Swiss Air Force . Today he works as an Airbus pilot at Swiss and works as an inventor in his spare time.

Glider

Yves Rossy became known for the development of a glider made of rigid wings with jet engines, which enables parachutists to stay longer in the air with a larger radius. In cooperation with a research and development company, Rossy succeeded in designing the aircraft Jet Wing after several development steps (including with inflatable gliding wings) . The glider is strapped to the back and consists of a hinged rigid wing made of carbon fibers and fiberglass with a span of around three meters and four small jet engines that are otherwise only used in model making and drones . With this device he was able to fly in controlled level flight for about ten minutes at speeds between 120 and 300 km / h without further assistance. Take off from an airplane, steered with the body. A parachute is required for landing. For the flight he uses a fireproof protective suit because of the 700 ° C hot engines.

The aircraft is comparable to existing developments such as B. the Gryphon ("Griffin"). The extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner introduced an early version of the glider in 2003 with a flight over the English Channel . Rossy also flew over the strait. At noon on September 26, 2008, he jumped his aircraft from an aircraft at an altitude of 2,300 m over Calais and flew at an average speed of over 200 km / h in ten minutes over the English Channel to Dover , where he landed with a parachute. The flight had to be postponed twice before due to bad weather conditions.

However, Rossy's first intercontinental flight on November 25, 2009 from Morocco to Spain failed. After a third of the flight time he fell into the water in the Strait of Gibraltar due to a loss of orientation in the clouds . Rossy was unharmed.

In addition to experts, Rossy's development is also of interest to laypeople due to the videos available on the Internet. The suitability of the glider for military use also shows the interest of the US military. At the 35th international fair for inventions (2007) in Geneva , Rossy and his device (in addition to CERN ) were a much-noticed guest of honor.
