The Dudhkoshi (also Dudh Kosi , Nepali दुधकोशी नदी IAST Dudhkoshī Nadī , German 'Milch-Koshi-Fluss' ) is a river in the Himalayas in eastern Nepal that drains the Khumbu region south of Mount Everest .
Surname
The name corresponds to the very light color of the water due to the sediment carried along with it (analogue: Seti Gandaki = "White Gandaki"). The gradient of the whitewater river is extremely great, with flow speeds of up to 50 km / h.
course
The river arises at the glacier gate of the Ngozumpa glacier east of the Gokyo lakes and flows in a predominantly southern direction through the Himalayas to Namche Bazar , where it joins the Bhotekoshi ("Tibetkoshi"). A little bit above the confluence is the famous Hillary Bridge . A little further south the Dudhkoshi leaves the Sagarmatha National Park and then flows west below Lukla . The Lamding Khola flows in southwest of Surkya , after which the river flows further south to flow into the Sunkoshi at Harkapur , which later joins other rivers to form the Koshi , which in turn ultimately joins the Ganges further south . The upper and middle reaches of the Dudhkoshi are in the Solukhumbu district , while the lower reaches the border between the Okhaldhunga districts in the west and Khotang in the east.
First ride
In the spring of 1973 the river was used for the first time by a Czechoslovak white water expedition.
In late summer 1976 there was a second white water kayaking expedition led by Mike Jones . The British group started at the Khumbu glacier (at approx. 5300 m) and then traveled sections of the Dudhkoshi between Pheriche and the confluence with the Sunkoshi . Because of the popularity of this expedition through the film "Dudh Kosi: Relentless River of Everest", it is often considered to be the first time ever.
