Eleuthera is an island in the Bahamas 80 km east of Nassau . It is around 180 km long and in some places less than a kilometer wide. The population is around 7,800 (as of 2010). The name "Eleuthera" comes from the feminine form of the Greek word ελεύθερος eléutheros 'free'.

Most of the indigenous population of Arawak Taíno Indians were deported by the Spaniards for mine work, where the vast majority died around 1550. The islands are considered unoccupied until the first European settlement; Puritan pilgrims came to the island from Bermuda in 1648. They also gave the island its current name. Some people believe that Christopher Columbus landed on Eleuthera in the first place.

The island was quite wealthy between 1950 and 1980 and attracted numerous American industrialists, such as Arthur Vining Davis , Henry John Kaiser , and Juan Tripp . Other famous visitors were also film stars such as Robert De Niro or Prince Charles and the pregnant Princess Diana .

With the independence of the Bahamas in 1973, all large resorts and plantations were abandoned and sold to interested parties favored by the Bahamas government. Due to the turmoil of the newly emerging state, however, the new economic efforts failed.

Unemployment on the island is close to 80%, with the remaining 20% working mostly in public areas as well as in a growing market for second homes.

Natural beauties are the Glass Window Bridge , the Hatchet Bay Caves and Surfer's Beach in the north and the Ocean Hole and Lighthouse Beach at the south end. In the meantime, it has also been established that the island of Eleuthera is one of the wintering quarters of the rare Michigan warbler , which breeds in a small area in the US state of Michigan and is one of the bird species with one of the smallest continental breeding areas. Further research is currently underway with the aim of protecting the main wintering areas of this threatened bird species.

Most of the residents can be found in Governor's Harbor (the administrative center of the island), Rock Sound , Tarpum Bay (the last fishing village). Harbor Island with its unusual pink sand beaches and Spanish Wells . The island is best known for the quality of its pineapples and holds an annual pineapple festival in Gregory Town.

Lenny Kravitz has a second home on Eleuthera.
