New Providence ( Engl. New Providence ) is the most populous island of the Bahamas and is located in the North Atlantic between the far larger but sparsely populated islands of Andros in the southwest and Eleuthera in the northeast. Nassau , the capital of the Bahamas, is located on New Providence .

The island, to which from an administrative point of view also the immediately northeast upstream Paradise Island is counted, has an area of 207 km². Of the 353,658 inhabitants of the Bahamas in 2010, 70.4% lived on New Providence, which corresponds to 248,948 inhabitants, although the island only makes up 1.5% of the island group's land mass. In the 17th century, the island was home to pirates who went on their raids from here. 2000 men lived in the harbor and in the wooden buildings on land, there were no laws. The island was so well fortified that it protected its inhabitants from pursuers; Sufficient food could be obtained from the hinterland . During the American Revolutionary War , New Providence was the site of the Continental Marines' first overseas mission in 1776 .
