In the Kauhajoki rampage on September 23, 2008, the 22-year-old vocational school student Matti Juhani Saari killed ten people in the small town of Kauhajoki in western Finland . He then killed himself with a shot in the head.

Sequence of events

On September 23, 2008, around eleven o'clock in the morning, the 22-year-old student entered the Palvelualojen-Oppilaitos vocational school for tourism, restaurant and household trades with a Walther P22 pistol , at which about 150 of the school's 200 students were present, and Targeted killing of known classmates or students of his year. This school shoot is therefore clearly a massacre , which is now usually replaced by "amok" in everyday language. Some victims died from smoke inhalation because Saari also started a fire. A total of seven schoolgirls, one pupil, one teacher and one teacher died. Saari then inflicted fatal injuries to himself.

backgrounds

The gunman had profiles on YouTube and MySpace under the name Wumpscut86 , which is derived from the electro-industrial music project Wumpscut and the year he was born. The profiles were blocked shortly after they became known. Saari had presented himself there with weapons and stated that his hobbies included “computers, weapons, sex and beer”.

According to the police, who found records in Saari's apartment, Saaris had planned his act for six years. The gunman gave "hatred of the human race" as the motive for his act. Former classmates describe him as an outsider who was subjected to frequent bullying at school .

Bullying is often considered to be a major cause of school rampage , including the Winnenden rampage , the Jokela school massacre , the Emsdetten rampage and the Littleton school massacre . Other researchers disagree and instead identify other reasons for it.

After the school massacre in Jokela, the government tried to tighten control over private gun ownership , but the gunman in Kauhajoki had had a gun license since August. On September 29, 2008, the regulation for the granting of a permit to own a handgun was finally tightened in Finland.
