In the school massacre in Jokela , the 18-year-old student Pekka-Eric Auvinen killed a total of eight people on November 7, 2007 in a school center in Jokela , part of the Finnish community of Tuusula north of Helsinki.

After the perpetrator killed four schoolchildren, a school nurse , a student and the headmistress with a small-caliber (.22 LR) Sig-Sauer Mosquito pistol, he inflicted serious gunshot wounds to himself, which he later succumbed to in hospital. Headmistress Helena Kalmi died after warning all teachers and students over the loudspeaker system and then standing in the way of the perpetrator.

Auvinen is considered to be the first killer to make a name for himself on the internet before he committed himself. In the preceding months he had created numerous videos for YouTube (the police found 46 on his computer; however, he himself stated over 140). His classmates had known about these online activities since the spring of 2007 and there were rumors that he was planning a bomb attack. In June 2007, the YouTuber TheAmazingAtheist (civil: Terroja Lee Kincaid) warned in a video that Auvinen could be a potential gunman and referred to social Darwinist content in his videos that glorified the Columbine perpetrators. Auvinen first appeared under the name NaturalSelector89 until it was banned from YouTube; then he used the Sturmgeist 89 channel . Immediately before the crime he announced it in a video entitled "Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007" . Police investigation revealed that Auvinen had been a victim of school bullying for years . He also had mental health problems. In 2006 a doctor had prescribed serotonin reuptake inhibitors for panic disorder and social phobia , although, in Finland, these are not recommended for minors. An attempt by his parents to admit him to a psychiatric hospital failed because they were told that his symptoms were not severe enough for him to be and that they should increase the dosage instead.
In his suicide note, Auvinen described himself as a "cynical existentialist, anti-humanist humanist, anti-social social Darwinist, realistic idealist and [as] a godlike atheist". In this he also announced that he was ready to die in his rampage himself , which he also put into practice. Auvinen announced “to eliminate all who turn out to be worthless, to be a disgrace for the human race and a failure of natural selection ”, because 94 percent of humanity consists of mindless “ mass people ”. The perpetrator adored the two perpetrators of the rampage at Columbine High School and was in possession of a black T-shirt with the white inscription "Humanity is overrated", in German "Menschlichkeit ist überrated", which the television series Dr. House was borrowed. He went on to claim, referring to a quote from Eric Harris, that it is not worth fighting for the human race, only eradicating it. His thoughts were influenced, among others, by Friedrich Nietzsche , Theodore Kaczynski , Pentti Linkola and Plato .
Finland ranks third in the world for the number of firearms per inhabitant, with 56 firearms for every 100 people. Violence on this scale is still considered rare in Finland. When bombing of Vantaa in 2002, seven people were killed, while shooting rampage in Kauhajoki in 2008 the loss was to complain of eleven lives.
Reactions
State mourning was ordered for the day after the crime , and a memorial service was held in Helsinki Cathedral . The Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen announced a review of the gun laws in view of the fact that the gunman was in possession of a gun license .
