Somchai Wongsawat ( Thai : สมชาย วงศ์ สวัสดิ์ , pronunciation: [ sǒmʨʰaːj woŋsàwát ]; born August 31, 1947 in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province , southern Thailand ) was Prime Minister of Thailand from September 17, 2008 to December 2, 2008 .

Somchai Wongsawat is married to Yaowapha Wongsawat ( Thai : เยาว ภา วงศ์ สวัสดิ์ ), a sister of Thaksin Shinawatra .

In 1970 Somchai Wongsawat graduated from Thammasat University in Bangkok with a Bachelor of Laws. In 1973 he became a lawyer. In 1975 he was appointed a judge. In 1986 Somchai was appointed presiding judge of Phang Nga Province, Thailand . After various positions as a judge, then presiding judge at various provincial courts, he first became a judge, and then in 1997 he became presiding judge of a court of appeal.

Political career

From 1999 to 2006 he was State Secretary in the Thai Ministry of Justice , from March to September 2006 in the Ministry of Labor. In 2002, he obtained a Masters in Public Administration from the Thai National Institute for Economic Development. Since 2007 Somchai has been deputy chairman of the Phak Palang Prachachon ( PPP , roughly: "People's Power Party") and a member of parliament.

In February 2008, Somchai became Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister in Samak Sundaravej's cabinet . In the latter capacity, he was initially acting premier at the beginning of September 2008 after Samak was removed from office by a ruling by the constitutional court . On September 17th, Somchai was elected the new Prime Minister by the Thai parliament. On December 2, 2008, however, the Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the ruling Phak Palang Prachachon party on account of alleged electoral fraud and banned Somchai and other leading PPP politicians from political activity for the next five years.
