Phang-nga ( Thai : พังงา , [pʰaŋ ŋaː] ) is a province ( Changwat ) on the Andaman Sea coast in the southern region of Thailand . The capital of Phang-nga Province is also called Phang-nga .

Geography and climate

Phang-nga is on the western side of the Malay Peninsula . The province is mostly mountainous, with many beaches on the Andaman Sea. The most important beach for tourists is Khao Lak , which was badly damaged by the tsunami on December 26, 2004 .

The limestone islands off the Phang-nga Bay are u. a. known from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun - especially the "James Bond Island" Khao Phing Kan , which has now become a crowded tourist destination. The islands are protected in the Ao Phang-nga National Park.

About a third of the country is used for agriculture . Otherwise tourism has some meaning. Khao Lak ( Amphoe Takua Pa ) is one of the most important destinations for international beach tourism on the Thai Andaman Sea coast.

By far the largest contributing industry to the province's economic output in 2011 was agriculture with 17.495 billion baht, followed by transport, storage and communications with 5.582 billion baht, wholesale and retail with 4.980 billion baht and the hotel and restaurant industry with 4.080 billion baht.

history

The province goes back to three cities ( Müang ) of comparable size - Thalang, Takua Pa and Takua Tung. When these were attacked by the Burmese army in 1809, King Phra Phutthaloetla ( Rama II ) founded the city of Phang-nga, as the refugees had already settled along the Maenam Phang-nga (Phang-nga River). In 1840 Phang-nga was elevated to the status of provincial capital in order to better protect the strategically important region against attacks by the Burmese and their occupiers, the English. Takua Tung was placed under Phang-nga; In 1931 Takua Pa was also incorporated into the province.

Local administration

A provincial administrative organization ( บริหาร ส่วน จังหวัด , อบ จ for short , Ongkan Borihan suan Changwat ; English Provincial Administrative Organization , PAO) exists for the entire area of ​​the province .

There are two "cities" ( เทศบาล เมือง - Thesaban Mueang ) in the province : Takua Pa ( เทศบาล เมือง ตะกั่วป่า ) and Phang-nga ( เทศบาล เมือง พังงา พ ราย ). There are also 7 “small towns” ( เทศบาล ตำบล - Thesaban Tambon ).
