Amphoe Takua Pa ( Thai : อำเภอ ตะกั่วป่า ) is a district ( amphoe - administrative district) in Phang Nga Province . The Phang Nga Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .

geography

The district is on the coast of the Andaman Sea . In the north of Takua Pa lies the Si Phang-nga National Park. The southern part of the district is taken up by the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, which is also home to the well-known holiday resort of Khao Lak .

Neighboring counties and areas are (clockwise from north): Amphoe Khura Buri of Phang Nga Province in the north, Amphoe Phanom of Surat Thani Province and Amphoe Kapong of Phang Nga Province in the east, and Amphoe Thai Mueang of Phang Nga Province in the south.

history

The area was already a center of trade between China and the Middle East in the first millennium , which excavations at Ko Kho Khao show.

The city of Takua Pa was originally called Takola ( ตะโก ลา ) and was one of the historical city-states ( Mueang ) whose roots lie in the 13th century in the realm of Srivijaya . It was later renamed Takua Pa because of the rich deposits of lead found nearby. Takua is the Thai word for lead , although the tin deposits were historically more important.

The city was long administered by the Kingdom of Nakhon Si Thammarat. It was not until 1892 that it was converted into a province within Monthon Phuket. The province was then incorporated into the Pangnga Province on April 1, 1931, while the Talad Yai ( ตลาด ใหญ่ , "Big Market") district was renamed Takua Pa.

On December 26, 2004, a tidal wave flooded Takua Pa. The tidal wave was triggered by a sea earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale off the Indonesian island of Sumatra , which triggered a tsunami . Over 1000 people died in the village of Ban Nam Khem, 500 have been missing since then. The whole village was devastated. Of 1200 houses only 200 remained. A stranded fishing boat was erected as a memorial, the "Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park".

Attractions

Others

The resort of Khao Lak, as well as the coastal subdistricts ( tambon ) of the Takua Pa district, namely Khuekkhak, Bang Muang and the island of Ko Kho Khao , were devastated by the tsunami of the seaquake on December 26, 2004 in the Indian Ocean . While the rescue efforts by the authorities concentrated primarily on the tourist centers, peripheral areas such as the fishing village of Ban Nam Khem in the Bang Muang subdistrict were largely left to their own devices in dealing with the disaster, despite the large number of local deaths. Today there is a "Tsunami Victim Cemetery" in Ban Nam Khem.
