- Glendale / United States : The New York Giants win the 42nd Super Bowl against the New England Patriots . It is her third Super Bowl win and her seventh championship title overall.
- Ludwigshafen / Germany : Nine people die in a house fire, including five children.
- Washington, DC / United States : According to today's proposal by the Bush administration, the state budget should reach the highest balance in its history with a deficit of 400 billion US dollars (276.7 billion euros ) .

- Munich / Germany : Following a request from the left-wing parliamentary group , the federal government announced that the military was being deployed in Germany at the security conference in Munich , which the newspaper Die Zeit rated as a circumvention of the constitution.
- United States : According to the " Super Tuesday " of primaries for the presidential election in November is considered John McCain as the clear favorite and top candidate of the Republicans . The decision has not yet been made in the Democratic Party . Barack Obama continues to see himself as an "underdog" after Hillary Clinton receives more delegate votes.
- United States : A violent storm front with tornadoes , hail and rain sweeps across the southern states, killing at least 54 people.

- Rome / Italy : President Giorgio Napolitano dissolves the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Italian Parliament, the Prodi cabinet sets the dates for new elections on April 13th and 14th .

- Antarctica , Australia , New Zealand : An annular solar eclipse with a peak of 2 minutes 12 seconds can be observed from many places in the southern hemisphere.
- Berlin / Germany : The 58th Berlin International Film Festival opens with the film Shine a Light by director Martin Scorsese . The Zoo Palast serves as the location of the “Panorama Section”, but the organizers are calling for its renovation.
- Cape Canaveral / United States : At 8.45 p.m. CET , the space shuttle Atlantis starts for the STS-122 mission , which will bring the Columbus space laboratory to the international space station and install it there.
- Ludwigshafen / Germany : The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan comes to the apartment building in the city center that burned down on Sunday in the late afternoon . There he meets Prime Minister Kurt Beck for a meeting . Contrary to his public suspicions of the last few days about xenophobia against people of Turkish origin , Erdoğan is now criticizing the Turkish media that also speculated about xenophobia.
- Paris / France : After the National Assembly and the Senate , President Nicolas Sarkozy ratifies the Treaty of Lisbon of the European Union . France is the first country to complete ratification of the treaty.
- Wolfegg / Germany : By press reports is known that the Medieval house book on Schloss Wolfegg from the late 15th century and has been for 350 years held at the castle, the head of the House John Graf zu Waldburg-Wolfegg for around 20 million euros to a not mentioned private collector was sold.

- Port Wentworth / United States : At least six people die and more than 60 people are seriously injured in the explosion of a sugar factory near Savannah in the US state of Georgia .

- United States : Barack Obama wins the 2008 US presidential primaries in the Democratic Party in Louisiana , Nebraska , Washington and the US Virgin Islands and can close the gap on Hillary Clinton ; in the Republican Party , Mike Huckabee wins in Kansas and narrowly in Louisiana, John McCain wins narrowly in Washington and remains the front runner.

- Los Angeles / United States : At the 2008 Grammy Awards , the British soul singer Amy Winehouse (5 wins) and the American hip-hop musician Kanye West (4 wins) become the most successful artists.

- United States : In the primaries for the 2008 US presidential election , the Democratic Party Barack Obama also wins the primaries in Maryland , Virginia and Washington, DC , and currently has the most delegate votes in the sum of all primaries. John McCain of the Republican Party wins also all votes in the same areas.
- Würzburg / Germany : The Archbishop of Freiburg im Breisgau Robert Zollitsch is elected at the spring plenary assembly of the German bishops to succeed Karl Lehmann as chairman of the German Bishops' Conference.

- Berlin / Germany : The German Bundestag passes a law to revise the law on renewable energies in the electricity sector , according to which the share of renewable energies in the German power supply is to be increased to 25 to 30 percent in 2020.
- Bonn , Cologne / Germany : The CEO of Deutsche Post AG, Klaus Zumwinkel , is suspected of evading one million euros in taxes . His office in Bonn and his private house in Cologne are searched. An arrest warrant against him will not be carried out because Zumwinkel is cooperative and offers a security deposit.
- DeKalb / United States : In a rampage at Northern Illinois University , a black-clad gunman shoots five people and then himself. 16 other people are injured. The shooter was a former university student.

- Chicago / United States : The multimillionaire Steve Fossett , who has been missing for five months, is pronounced dead by a court in the United States. He took off on a small plane in Nevada on September 3 and then disappeared without a trace. Fossett was famous for his daring world record attempts.

- Berlin / Germany : The 58th Berlin Film Festival ends with the award of the Golden Bear to the Brazilian contribution Tropa de Elite by José Padilha . With silver bears u. a. the actors Sally Hawkins ( Happy-Go-Lucky ) and Reza Naji ( The Song of Sparrows ), as well as the Oscar- nominated American director Paul Thomas Anderson ( There Will Be Blood ). The German competition entries will not receive a prize.

- Kandahar / Afghanistan : The worst suicide attack in the country's history kills at least 80 people and injures 90 others in the city of Kandahar.
- Pristina / Serbia : At an extraordinary meeting of the Parliament of Kosovo is independence from Serbia proclaimed. The former autonomous province in the Serbian republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and today's part of the Republic of Serbia, which is predominantly inhabited by Albanians , has for decades been in an increasingly violent conflict with its northern neighbor, who does not recognize the current unilateral split.

- Havana / Cuba : Head of State Fidel Castro announces his resignation.
- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : Parliament adopts the law on euthanasia and assisted suicide .
- Tournai / Belgium : In an attack on the Notre-Dame Cathedral , a total of 13 chalices, bishop's rings and crosses are stolen. Including a Byzantine cross that was donated to the cathedral in 1205 and that is said to contain a piece of wood from the cross of Jesus. The total value of the stolen objects is estimated at 40 million euros.
- United States : Barack Obama wins the primaries for the US presidency of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin and Hawaii , further expanding the lead over Hillary Clinton . In the Republicans , John McCain wins in Wisconsin and in the Washington by-elections .
- Zurich / Switzerland : Two of the total of four paintings that were stolen from the Bührle collection last week turned up in the parking lot of a psychiatric hospital in Zurich. It was a picture each by Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet

- Cape Canaveral / United States : The space shuttle Atlantis has safely returned to earth with the German Hans Schlegel . She landed on schedule in Cape Canaveral at 3:07 p.m. CET . The mission had attached the Columbus research laboratory to the ISS space station .
- Pacific : The US Navy shoots down the runaway spy satellite USA 193 filled with poisonous hydrazine from the cruiser USS Lake Erie near Hawaii with an SM-3 missile at an altitude of around 210 km .

- Sagaing region / Myanmar : Work on the Buddhist statue Laykyun Setkyar , which began in 1996, will be completed on Po Khaung Hill . The 116 m high sculpture represents the awakened Siddhartha Gautama .
- Venezuela : A Venezuelan ATR 42-300 turboprop aircraft belonging to the Franco-Italian aircraft manufacturer Avions de Transport Régional crashed over the Andes . All 46 passengers were killed.

- Ankara / Turkey : Prime Minister Abdullah Gül approves the lifting of the headscarf ban at Turkish universities and colleges.
- Braunschweig / Germany : The regional court of Braunschweig sentenced Klaus Volkert to two years and nine months in prison for aiding and abetting and inciting unfaithfulness . Volkert gained more than two million euros in the VW corruption affair.
- Iraq : The Turkish army launched a ground offensive in northern Iraq involving an estimated 10,000 soldiers. During the clashes with the PKK there was heavy resistance. According to Turkey, the neighboring country is used as a retreat for extremists. The PKK, which is also classified by the EU as a terrorist organization, controls attacks and attacks in Turkey from northern Iraq. Turkish soldiers, police officers, Kurdish village guards and bystanders also die again and again.

- Los Angeles / United States : At the 2008 Academy Awards , No Country for Old Men was honored as best film, for which Ethan and Joel Coen also received the Oscar for best director. Daniel Day-Lewis wins the Oscar for best leading actor for his role in There Will Be Blood , Marion Cotillard for her role in La vie en rose as best leading actress. The Oscar for the best foreign language film goes to Austria for the first time with Die Fälscher .
