Tomislav Nikolić

Tomislav Nikolić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Томислав Николић ; born February 15, 1952 in Kragujevac ) is a Serbian politician ( Serbian Progressive Party ). From 8 to 13 May 2007 he was briefly President of the Serbian Parliament . He was President of Serbia from June 11, 2012 to May 31, 2017 .

Political career

From 1998 to 2000 Nikolić was Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia in Slobodan Milošević's government and, at the end of 1999, Vice Prime Minister of Yugoslavia. In the presidential election in 2000, Nikolić took third place behind Vojislav Koštunica and Slobodan Milošević. In the presidential election on June 13, 2004, he received 30.1 percent of the votes in the first round, but was defeated in the runoff election on June 27, 2004 against Boris Tadić , who received 53.5 percent of the votes.

After the parliamentary elections on January 21, 2007 , from which the SRS emerged again as the strongest party, Tomislav Nikolić was elected as the new parliamentary president of Serbia on May 8, 2007. In addition to the votes of his party, he also received the votes of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) under the leadership of Vojislav Koštunica . After the agreement of the so-called democratic bloc of DS, DSS and G17plus to form a coalition government, he resigned on May 13, 2007.

In the presidential elections on January 20, 2008, Nikolić won the most votes in front of the incumbent Boris Tadić , but was defeated two weeks later in the runoff election for the presidency. In the parliamentary elections in 2008 , the party led by Nikolić was able to maintain its share of the vote, but the electoral alliance around the Democratic Party achieved the best result with almost 38% of the votes cast. As a result of Kosovo's declaration of independence , which the SRS rhetorically opposed , observers had expected an increase in the number of votes.

In September 2008 he resigned from the parliamentary group and vice-party chairmanship and founded a new parliamentary group under the name "Napred Srbijo" ( German  Vorwärts Serbia ), but without resigning from the SRS. Previously, there had been a fierce internal party dispute over the position of the group on the Association Agreement between Serbia and the European Union . While Nikolić voted for this in parliament, party chairman Vojislav Šešelj strictly rejected it and demanded Nikolić's expulsion from the party while imprisoned in The Hague . On September 12, 2008, Nikolić and 17 other leading party members were expelled from the SRS. Nikolić then announced the founding of his own party. On October 10, 2008 the new Serbian Progressive Party (Srpska Napredna Stranka, SNS) was registered. On April 16, 2011, he went on hunger strike to force new elections.

On May 20, 2012, Nikolić prevailed in a runoff election against Boris Tadić in the Serbian presidential election.

Before his election, Nikolić was considered a conservative nationalist. From 1991 to 2008 he was vice president of the nationalist SRS . As president, however, he tried successfully to continue the pro-European course of his predecessor Tadić. Nikolić supported the agreement signed in April 2013 to normalize relations between Serbia and Kosovo , notwithstanding the fact that he stressed that Serbia would still not recognize Kosovo's independence. The Kosovo Agreement is a prerequisite for the continuation of Serbia's EU accession negotiations .

Also in April 2013, in an interview with Bosnian television, Nikolić asked that Serbia be forgiven for the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica . Nikolić avoided the term “ genocide ”, but like his predecessor Tadić recognized the massacre as a crime committed by Serbs. Serbia has been an official candidate for EU membership since March 1, 2012 .

On February 14, 2017, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party appointed Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić as its candidate. The incumbent President Tomislav Nikolić, who is also a member of the SNS, announced his renewed candidacy the next day - his 65th birthday - which he withdrew on February 20, 2017. So only Vučić is a candidate for the SNS. Vučić won the election on April 3, 2017 in the first ballot with 55% of the vote. After five years, Nikolić's presidency ended with the swearing-in of his successor on May 31, 2017. On May 30 - one day before the end of his term in office - Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded him the Order of Friendship .

Political positions

In 2012, Nikolić declared that he had not yet given up the dream of a Greater Serbia . He  expressed the following opinion on the Croatian Vukovar : “Vukovar was Serbian. Croats do not have to return there. "

controversy

Shortly before his election as president of Serbia in 2012, Nikolic was the purchase of a master's degree from Fakultet za Menadžment (Faculty of Management) in Novi Sad accused. The main leads to support this claim were that his diploma was not stamped and that other students did not remember ever seeing him in class. On the day of the exam seven years earlier, Nikolić had attended a party event. A short time later, his diploma was checked for authenticity and this was confirmed.

Private

Nikolić is married and has two sons. His son Radomir is the mayor of the city of Kragujevac .
