Presidential election in Serbia 2012

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential elections in Serbia in 2012 took place in parallel to the Serbian parliamentary elections on May 6, 2012.

After the incumbent President of Serbia, Boris Tadić , officially announced his resignation on April 5, 2012, early elections for the Serbian presidency were necessary. These were scheduled for the same date as the parliamentary elections. There were 12 candidates for election.

Incumbent Tadić ( DS ) was with 25.33% about 13,000 votes ahead of his challenger Tomislav Nikolić ( SNS ), who achieved 24.99% of the vote. The third largest applicant was Interior Minister Ivica Dačić ( SPS ) with 14.24%. The turnout was 57.9%.

Since none of the applicants achieved an absolute majority, Tadić and Nikolić had to face a runoff election on May 20th. According to initial projections, Nikolić leads with 49.5% of all votes against 47.35% for Tadić. Tadić admitted his defeat.

Alleged election fraud

The leader of the opposition in Serbia, Tomislav Nikolić, has called for the parliamentary elections to be canceled because of large-scale electoral fraud. 500,000 non-existent people and dead are said to have been entered on the electoral lists and their votes went to Tadić. The local elections that were organized at the same time in 17 polling stations in the second largest city of Nis had already been declared null and void because the ballot boxes contained more ballot papers than the votes cast. In Belgrade, too, the local elections on Thursday were canceled due to irregularities in 16 polling stations.
