Presidential election in Serbia 2017
The presidential election in Serbia 2017 took place on April 2, 2017. Since the incumbent Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić received an absolute majority in the first ballot, a runoff election on April 16 was not necessary.
It was the eleventh election since the office was introduced in 1990. The incumbent President Tomislav Nikolić of the ruling national-conservative Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) did not stand for election after the end of his five-year term in office.
Candidates
On February 14, 2017, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (Srpska Napredna Stranka, SNS) appointed Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić as its candidate. The incumbent President Tomislav Nikolić, who also belongs to the SNS, announced his renewed candidacy the next day - his 65th birthday - but withdrew it on February 20, 2017. So only Vučić is a candidate for the SNS.
