The parliamentary election in Serbia 2020 was originally scheduled for April 26, but has been postponed to June 21, 2020.

There will be no elections as long as the country has to fight the corona virus, said President Aleksandar Vučić on March 16, 2020 on state television. A new date will not be decided until the crisis is over, he added.

Election results, changes in electoral law and boycott

In the elections on June 21, some of which were boycotted by the opposition, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) again received an absolute majority of the seats in the Serbian National Assembly. In addition to the boycott, severe storms and floods also led to a low turnout of 48.88% compared to 56.1% in 2016.

In February 2020, the threshold clause for parliamentary entry was reduced from 5 to 3 percent in order to avert an overly monotonous composition of the parliament. The new parliament now consists of 7 different parties.

After the election

The Serbian election observation commission (CRTA) found that the parliamentary elections only met a minimum of democratic standards and that overall democracy was endangered. Twice as many incidents (e.g. buying votes and multiple votes) were recorded as in the previous election in 2016. Since the country's independence, the election has been the “worst”. However, there was no doubt about the legality of the result.

The OSCE certified that an election was carried out efficiently in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic , but criticized the fact that suggestions for improvements made after the 2016 election had not been implemented, among other things in the area of election campaign financing and election organization.
