JUGENE ( Jülich Blue Gene ) was a supercomputer of the BlueGene / P type at the Jülich Research Center and the successor to JUBL, which operated there until 2008 . The computer belonged to the Institut Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and the virtual Gauss Center for Supercomputing .

With 294,912 clocked at 850 MHz PowerPC 450 - cores and 144  terabytes of memory - each of the nodes 73728 contained a quad-core processor and two gigabytes of RAM - 72 in cabinets of the computer generated an output of 825.5  TFLOPS (R max ).

The acquisition was financed by the research center, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Helmholtz Association . The head of the JSC Thomas Lippert emphasized " the special thing about our JUGENE is the extremely low power consumption compared to other systems with the highest computing power " - according to the manufacturer, a BlueGene / P system should provide approx. 0.35 GFLOPS / watt and thus almost twice be as efficient as the previous model used in the same place.

The official inauguration in the presence of the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers took place on February 22, 2008; Also on that day, a few hours later, the civilian but even faster ranger at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) of the University of Texas at Austin officially went into operation.

The first version of JUGENE at the time achieved an official LINPACK performance of 167.3 TFLOPS (R max ) with 16 racks and secured second place on the TOP500 list of November 2007 as the fastest computer for civil use .

The upgrade to the last expansion stage was inaugurated on May 26, 2009 and used productively from July 1, 2009. The 1 petaflops (R peak ) mark was broken for the first time in May 2009 - JUGENE is therefore known as the first European petaflops calculator.

JUGENE was switched off in 2012 and replaced in May 2012 by the Blue Gene / Q system JUQUEEN , which took 8th place in the 39th TOP500 list from June 2012.
