TNK-BP is a Russian oil and gas company with headquarters in Moscow and since March 2013 it has been wholly owned by Rosneft .

history

TNK represents T jumenskaja N eftjanaja K ompanija or Tyumen Oil Company . In 1996 Wiktor Felixowitsch Wekselberg took part in the auctions of Russian state-owned companies and, with the help of the Alfa Group , acquired 44% of TNK from Michail Maratowitsch Fridman . - In 2003 the 50/50 joint venture TNK-BP Ltd. was established. in the British Virgin Islands . British Petroleum (BP) invested around USD 7 billion in TNK-BP at the time. The other 50% was held by the then ARA consortium (composed of A ccess Industries from Leonard Blavatnik , R enova Group from Wekselberg and A lfa Group from Fridman).

In 2006, the company employed around 71,000 people and operated primarily in Russia. TNK-BP mined and delivered crude oil and natural gas and also supplied end customers via its own filling station network.

In July 2008, the then TNK-BP company boss Bob Dudley fled Russia because a. The temporary visa had already expired in 2007 and thus his right to work in Russia. Dudley accused the Russian government of state bureaucracy with massive harassment, and he also accused his ARA partners of "blackmail". In this connection it should be taken into account that in March 2008 the domestic secret service FSB and the tax investigators had the headquarters of TNK-BP in Moscow searched and temporarily arrested an employee on suspicion of industrial espionage; In March 2008, the Duma also approved, at second reading, a draft law restricting foreign investments in sectors of the economy “of strategic importance”.

The former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder was appointed to the Supervisory Board in January 2009 as one of three independent members . In December 2011, however, two of the supervisory board members resigned, including Schröder.

At the beginning of June 2012, Michail Fridman resigned from the dispute with BP as Chief Operating Officer of TNK-BP.

Takeover by Rosneft

On October 22, 2012, Rosneft announced the acquisition of TNK-BP for early 2013. A 50 percent stake was acquired from BP for around 28 billion US dollars, for which BP received 17 billion US dollars in cash and will have a 19.75% stake in Rosneft in the future. Rosneft also announced that it would also buy the ARA consortium its 50 percent stake in the joint venture. ARA received approximately $ 28 billion for its stake. According to the company, Roneft became “the world's largest listed oil and gas company for hydrocarbon reserves and production” through the acquisition of TNK-BP.
