List of Hessian Prime Ministers
This list includes all Prime Ministers of the People's State of Hesse and the State of Greater Hesse since 1919, and the Prime Ministers of the State of Hesse since 1945.
From 1935 until the occupation of the state of Hessen by American troops at the end of March 1945, Jakob Sprenger ( NSDAP ), as Reich Governor, was also the leader of the state government. From the US military government, Prof. Ludwig Bergsträsser (SPD) took on the task of setting up a supra-regional administration based in Darmstadt . By the beginning of August 1945, all districts and independent cities of the former provinces of Starkenburg and Upper Hesse of the People's State of Hesse were gradually placed under its administration. This then called itself the "German Government of the State of Hesse" but after the proclamation of Greater Hesse only had the status of a district government for the administrative district of Darmstadt .
Up to now there was a managing government in Hessen under two prime ministers. This was the case for the first time under Holger Börner from 1982 to 1984. The second time in 2008/09 under Roland Koch. Cabinets of a governing government are marked with a letter.
