Juan Camilo Mouriño
Juan Camilo Mouriño Terrazo (born August 1, 1971 in Madrid - † November 4, 2008 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican politician of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and since January 15, 2008 Minister of the Interior in the cabinet of President Felipe Calderón .
Life
Mouriño was born in 1971 in the Spanish capital, the son of a Spaniard and a Mexican, whose parents, like his father, came from Galicia . His father Carlos Mouriño emigrated to Mexico in 1978, where he became one of the most important entrepreneurs in the State of Campeche . He has lived in Spain again since 2000, where he is, among other things, president of the Celta Vigo soccer club .
At the age of 18, Mouriño received his Mexican citizenship. He studied economics at the private University of Tampa in the United States and later with a major in finance at the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche .
After graduating, Mouriño was initially a member of the Congress of the State of Campeche . In 2003 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor of Campeche . When Felipe Calderón was appointed Minister of Energy in the government of Vicente Fox Quesada , Calderón named Mouriño its Secretary of State. From 2006 to 2008 he headed Calderón's office and was its campaign manager. Mouriño joined President Felipe Calderón's cabinet as Minister of the Interior in January 2008. In this role he took up the fight against Mexico's powerful drug cartels . Mouriño was considered Calderón's closest confidante, was his deputy and thus the second highest authority in the Mexican government hierarchy.
Mouriño was killed in a plane crash on the evening of November 4, 2008. The Learjet 45 (XC-VMC) of the Mexican Ministry of the Interior was on the way to City Mexico Airport as she the affluent district of Lomas de Chapultepec crashed in Mexico City. The wreck landed on the Paseo de la Reforma . A total of 16 people were killed and several people were injured on the ground.
