When a Learjet 45 crashed in Mexico City in 2008 on November 4, 2008, a total of 16 people died, including Mexico's Interior Minister Juan Camilo Mouriño .
course
At 6:04 p.m., the Learjet 45 took off from San Luis Potosi Airport . At around 6:40 p.m. the Learjet passed the rotating radio beacon (VOR) LUCIA and at 6:44 p.m. the VOR MATEO at an altitude of 11,000 feet. At around 6.45 p.m., the air traffic controller instructed the pilots to switch to the frequency of the tower. This instruction was confirmed by the crew, but the tower was never addressed. When approaching runway 5L, the machine disappeared from the radar from an altitude of 9700 feet. The Learjet crashed at a 45 ° angle at the intersection of Monte Pelvoux and Ferrocarril de Cuernavaca and went up in flames. All occupants of the Learjet and seven people on the ground died.
Among the dead on the Learjet were:
- Juan Camilo Mouriño - Mexico's Minister of the Interior
- José Luis Santiago Vasconcelos - Former Deputy Minister of Justice
- Miguel Monterrubio
- Arcadio Echeverría Lanz - event coordinator
- Norma Díaz - Director of the Communications Department of the Secretaría de Gobernación
- Julio César Ramírez Dávalos
- Martin de Jesus Olivia Perez - Captain
- Álvaro Sánchez - copilot
- Gisel Carrillo - stewardess
Cause of accident
The Learjet got caught in the wake of a Boeing 767-300 flying in front of it on the Mexicana flight 1692, after which the aircraft went into a 45 ° nosedive. Due to the low altitude, the pilots could no longer intercept the machine. Due to mistakes made by the pilots, the Learjet was only 7.6 km behind the Boeing instead of the prescribed distance of 9.3 km. According to the voice recorder , the pilots also had little experience with the Learjet 45 and gaps in their training.
