James Richard Laurinaitis (born December 3, 1986 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is a retired American football player in the position of linebacker . He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes and was one of the best linebackers in college during that period. In 2009 he was selected in the NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams in the second round and was active for them in the National Football League (NFL) until the 2015 season . He then played for the New Orleans Saints .
college
Laurinaitis attended Ohio State University , where he played under Jim Tressel from 2005 to 2008 for the Ohio State Buckeyes . As a freshman , he was used in all twelve games and after an injury to his colleague Bobby Carpenter finally became a regular player, which he played through, among other things, in the victory in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame . After his sophomore season in college football , he led the Buckeyes with the most tackles (115) and interceptions (5). After the season he was awarded the Nagurski Award for the best defense player in college football. He was also a finalist at the Butkus and Bednarik Awards and was elected to the All-Star Team of the Big Ten Conference and named All-American . In 2007 he won the Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy for best linebacker in college, among many other awards . Even after his senior year at college, he was recognized for his athletic achievements and repeatedly voted best linebacker.
NFL
St. Louis Rams
In the 2009 NFL Draft , Laurinaitis was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the second round in 35th place as the first middle linebacker . He prevailed in the fight for the only starting place and immediately led his team in tackles (120). From 2009 to 2012, Laurinaitis dominated his team in this statistic - in 2013 he finished the season in second, behind Alec Ogletree . On February 19, 2016, Laurinaitis was released after seven seasons with the Rams.
New Orleans Saints
On March 16, 2016, he agreed on a new contract with the New Orleans Saints . He was released in November after an injury.
On April 11, 2017, he officially retired as a player from American football.

James Laurinaitis is the son of Road Warrior Animal , better known as "The Road Warrior" or "Road Warrior Animal", a former professional wrestler with Lithuanian descent. His uncle is John Laurinaitis , also a former wrestler who now works for the WWE .
