The parish church Strebersdorf is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Strebersdorf district of the 21st  Viennese district Floridsdorf . It is the feast of Mary Queen ordained . Before that, the Maria Immaculata monastery church in Anton-Böck-Gasse served as the parish church.

The parish is located in the city Deanery 21 of the Vienna Archdiocese belonging city Vicariate Vienna .

history

The Strebersdorf parish only became independent on November 1, 1939. Until 1541 Strebersdorf belonged to the parish of St. Georg in Kagran . Then a request to the Diocese of Passau was successful to integrate Strebersdorf into the previously newly founded parish of Stammersdorf , which is located closer to home. Strebersdorf remained there until after Stammersdorf was incorporated into Vienna in 1938.

Until 1888 the chapel of the castle was the only church in Strebersdorf. This was mentioned as the Marienkapelle as early as 1668. It is likely that there was a statue of the Virgin Mary in the chapel from around 1510, which was handed over to the Historical Museum in 1934 and a copy of which is now on display in the new parish church of Maria Königin.

In 1886 the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools moved into the Strebersdorfer Schlösschen and made it the seat of the Austro-Hungarian Order Province . From 1887 to 1888 the monastery church of the school brothers was built according to plans by Richard Jordan , but the tower with the bells was not completed until 1925. This monastery church, consecrated to Maria Immaculata , served the Strebersdorfers as a parish church from 1939 to 1961.

In 1939 the previous beneficiary Edmund Hawranek was entrusted with the management of the parish. After the end of the Second World War , the municipality of Vienna began building residential buildings in the districts north of the Danube . As early as the 1950s, thought was given to building a new parish church and moving the building site closer to the newly built Viennese community buildings to the terminus of today's tram line 26.

With Pastor Roland Pasecker the construction of the parish church according to the plans of the architect Ladislaus Hruska was started. The laying of the foundation stone took place on November 7, 1959 in the presence of Archbishop-Coadjutor Franz Jachym . He was also able to consecrate the new parish church to Maria Königin on October 14 and 15, 1961 . In 1991 the parish hall was opened according to the plans of the architect Johann Hoffmann.

architecture

Maria Königin in Strebersdorf is one of the 15 parish churches that were rebuilt in Vienna in the 1950s. This phase falls before the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . The chancel was not yet centrally arranged, but the interior was planned in such a way that the faithful could group around the altar from three sides. This is shown by the floor plan of the Gatterhölzl church in Vienna- Meidling , planned by Ladislaus Hruska shortly before the Maria Königin church , which was implemented as a central building. The parish church of Maria Königin, on the other hand, has a traditional, cross-shaped floor plan. However, a short nave with two transepts is almost T-shaped. This allows a grouping around the chancel, which is slightly recessed and just closed at the front. This sanctuary is higher than the nave and transept and is illuminated by a strip of light from the entrance side. After the council, the tabernacle was transferred from the altar to the weekday chapel, so that the altar now served as a popular altar.

Furnishing

A large cross depicting the crucified hangs above the high altar. This cross, which was created by Alexander Silveri , grows out of a split sphere. The substructure of the altar has the stylized shape of a crown and thus refers to the patronage of the parish church Maria Königin, which is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church on August 22nd.

The lighting in the transept is characterized by a large ribbon of windows that depicts twelve of the invocations from the Lauretanian litany , in which Mary is referred to as queen. The window comes from Heinrich Tahedl , who was friends with the architect Ladislaus Hruska and who created church windows for his sacred buildings several times, including the church of the Gatterhölzl parish, built between 1955 and 1959 .

In the two aisles are the statues of Saint Sebastian and Saint Florian . They come from the old castle chapel, which was demolished in 1968 and had to make way for a new school building. They were kept in the sacristy of the school brothers' monastery church and restored in 1984 so that they could be put up again in the new parish church. Also in this castle chapel was a statue of the Madonna from around 1510, which could no longer be placed in the new church because of its poor state of preservation. A copy of this statue of the Madonna was created by the sculptor Peter Staffler, consecrated in 2000 by Provost Bernhard Backovsky from Klosterneuburg Abbey and placed near the chancel.

After the parish was founded, a baptismal font had to be purchased in 1941 for the monastery church that served as the parish church. This basin made of Mannersdorfer limestone was consecrated after Christmas 1941. After completion of the new parish church, the baptismal font was set up in the anteroom of the new sacristy and in 1982 it was placed in the weekday chapel. In this chapel, a statue of the Virgin Mary by the Floridsdorf artist Karl Jetzinger was erected, which originally stood near the chancel of the main church. The chapel is illuminated by a large glass window by Erich Huber .
