He has been provost of Klosterneuburg Abbey since 1995 , was Abbot General of the Austrian Congregation from 2002 to 2017 and Abbot Primate of the international confederation of Augustinian Canons from 2010 to 2016 .

Life

Hermann Backovsky joined the Augustinian Canons Monastery of Klosterneuburg in 1961 after graduating from high school and received the religious name Bernhard in honor of Bernhard von Menthon . He was ordained a priest on March 27, 1967 and was chaplain in Korneuburg from 1967 to 1980 and in the parish of Floridsdorf from 1980 to 1982 . 1983–1995 he was novice master and cleric director in Klosterneuburg Abbey.

In May 1995 he was elected monastery dean and in December 1995 he was elected 66th provost and 17th Lateranian abbot of Klosterneuburg monastery; In 2005 they were re-elected and in 2015 they were elected for the third time and for life. On January 14, 1996 he received the benediction . In 2002 Backovsky was appointed Abbot General of the Austrian Augustinian Canons Congregation , which he held until 2017. From 2005 to 2006 he was the order prelate of the Grand Priory Austria of the Order of Lazarus .

On October 19, 2010 in Rome he was elected Abbot Primate of the Augustinian Canons by the Primatial Council. The abbot primate is always elected for a period of 6 years and then passed on to another person.

In 2015 he was elected provost for the third time, which means that he is for life.

In September 2017 Propst Bernhard Backovsky was confronted by Johannes Heibel, chairman of the German initiative against violence and sexual abuse of children and young people, with the accusation that he was personally responsible for an abuser from Klosterneuburg Abbey for his further career in the Church, thereby enabling the perpetrator to commit further abuse. On the basis of these media reports, a member of the klosterneuburg municipal council demanded in an open letter the resignation of Bernhard Backovsky, despite the provost's opinion.

On December 14, 2017, the Chapter Council of Klosterneuburg Monastery convened an independent expert group free of instructions, on the initiative of Propst Backovsky, to fully investigate the allegations. The group of experts is to investigate the allegations and, on this basis, carry out an assessment and elaboration of recommendations for the future work of the monastery. The report was presented in November 2018 and the profile reported on it; it found that the report is vague and that documents are missing or no longer available - the profile report ends with the sentence "After reading it, it feels stale". As a result, the role and responsibility of Provost Backovsky at that time could not be determined.
