The Parish Church Gartenstadt is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Gartenstadt district in the Neujedlersdorf district of the 21st  Viennese district Floridsdorf . The parish is located in the city Deanery 21 of the Vienna Archdiocese belonging city Vicariate Vienna . It is consecrated to the blood of Christ .

history

In the period between the two world wars, the need arose to build new parish stations in the areas where the city of Vienna moved across the Danube. The Karl-Seitz-Hof , designed as a garden city , was built between 1926 and 1933 . However, there was little money for large church buildings. Therefore, the future prelate Josef Gorbach set up an emergency church in one of the military barracks on the former Jedleseer parade ground in 1935 and headed the community himself. After the Second World War , this emergency church was renovated between 1947 and 1949. In the 1960s, the decision was finally made to build a new building on a suitable site. The choice fell on the former FAC soccer field . The architect was the city planner Alfons Leitl from Trier. He was already known in Germany for church buildings such as St. Martinus in Aldenhoven and St. Barbara in Mülheim an der Ruhr . Leitl planned the new parish station with the Church of the Holy Blood of Christ, which later became the parish church of the Gartenstadt parish. The construction was completed in the years 1962 to 1964. At the beginning of the 1980s, the residential complex of Prelate Dr. Gorbach Hof built.

architecture

A particular challenge for the architect Alfons Leitl was the proximity to the monumental Karl-Seitz-Hof. When positioning the church, he avoided its strict axis and aligned the stand-alone tower with the tangential Dunantgasse. The rectangular church received a centering tent roof. The walls are filigree, but only let in little light, so that the room appears mystical.

Inside the church are the baptismal font and a cross by Siegfried Walter.

The parish of the Syrian Orthodox Church in Vienna has been celebrating its services in the Blood of Christ Church since September 2006, on Saturdays before and Sundays after the Roman Catholic service.

Others

The parish is home to a kindergarten and after-school care center, a football club, a scout group, the Caritas Vienna Le + O distribution center , some choirs (including the Harmonie Choir Association) and other groups. Wojciech Dworak has been pastor since 2018. The garden city is also the home parish of the retired Bishop of Linz Ludwig Schwarz , whose family moved to the parish area in 1965.
