The Truckenthal Viaduct (also Truckenthal Bridge ) is a 425 m long, double-track railway overpass structure on the new Ebensfeld – Erfurt line between the kilometers 124.054 and 124.479.

The bridge is located in Südthüringen northeast of Schalkau in the district Truckenthal and covered with a sheet of 161 m span the truck Grund with the Bach Truck Thaler water and the national road 1112 Truckenthal according Theuern and the community route connecting Truckenthal according Neundorf .

The route is straight at a design speed of 300 km / h in the structural area, the gradient increases towards the north with a maximum of 10.9 per thousand. The bridge has a noise protection wall on both sides with a height of 2.0 m and a slab track with a distance of 4.5 m between the tracks . The structure was to be built between 2007 and 2009.

In April 2008, all six pillars, one of the two abutments and approaches to the arch were under construction. The arch should be completed by the end of 2008. Due to a construction accident on July 24, 2008, the closing of the arch was delayed by around a year and took place in December 2009. In September 2010, the last section of the superstructure was concreted and in August 2011 the bridge was completed.

course

To the south of the bridge there is an up to eight meter high dam followed by a 27 meter deep cut with the future overtaking station Theuern . After the train station, the Baumleite tunnel comes south , followed by the Bleßberg tunnel north of the valley bridge .

Substructure

The pillars of the bridge have a rectangular reinforced concrete hollow cross-section with broken corners and taper towards the top with a 70: 1 ratio. The external dimensions of the six piers at the pier head are 2.7 m × 5.8 m (width × depth). The six stands on the arch do not have a suit, their dimensions are constant 1.75 mx 4.6 m. The reinforced concrete arch with a span of 161 m and a 37.8 m pitch also has a hollow cross-section and is accessible. At the apex the external dimensions of the rectangular cross-section are approximately 5.6 m × 3.0 m (depth × height), in the transom it is approximately 7.0 m × 4.5 m. The arch was erected in cantilever with auxiliary supports. The southern abutment is the fixed point of the bridge and in particular transfers the longitudinal forces from braking into the subsoil. At the expansion joint of the northern abutment there is a rail extension with a compensating plate.

Around 8500 m³ of concrete will be used for the substructure.

superstructure

Cross section of the superstructure

The superstructure has a continuous beam with 13 fields as a building system . On both sides in front of the arch there are three openings with 44 m span and above the arch for the elevated road girder there are seven openings with 23 m span each. The superstructure has the cross-sectional shape of a single-cell reinforced concrete hollow box with inclined webs, prestressed in the longitudinal direction . In addition, the deck is prestressed in the transverse direction. The width of the deck slab is 13.3 m, that of the floor slab 4.8 m.

The superstructure was built using the incremental launching method . The overall height is 4.425 m. Around 5,500 m³ of concrete should be installed for the superstructure.

Construction accident

In the construction stage, the arch was supported by steel auxiliary supports. The arch load was introduced into the steel structure on each side of the cross-section using two hydraulic presses on which a steel wedge was mounted to carry the load. The inclined surfaces of the steel wedges were connected to steel plates in the bridge arch with screws. On July 24, 2008, during the assembly of the second auxiliary pillar, the screws above the first auxiliary pillar failed on the then approximately 43 m long northern arch section. This led to a chain reaction with the steel wedges and the presses bursting away from the side and the arch sagging by approx. 60 cm onto the top cross member of the auxiliary support. This resulted in a sudden rupture of the arch cross-section at the upper edge at the transition into the fighter foundation. Work on the bridge has been stopped. At the end of 2008, Deutsche Bahn reached an agreement with the building contractor to demolish the damaged part of the bridge including the foundation. The arch section including the pillar was blown up on January 28, 2009 with around 120 kg of explosives distributed over 30 places. Cautious estimates by Deutsche Bahn assume damage of two million euros.

The blast resulted in 3,300 tons of rubble. At the beginning of July 2009 the pillar and the first of the 27 segments of the new arch were restored. In the new building, the steel wedges were welded to the steel plates.
