Pöpelholz valley bridge

The Pöpelholz Viaduct is a 306 m long double-track railway overpass on the Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line between the route kilometers 115.508 and 115.814.

The girder bridge is located 10 kilometers northeast of Coburg near Weißenbrunn vorm Wald and spans the Pöpelholzgraben, a previously wooded valley with the Pöpelbach, and a farm road west of the Froschgrundsee . A few hundred meters west of the viaduct is the north portal of the Reitersberg tunnel . The route is almost straight in the structural area at a design speed of 300 km / h, the gradient increases to the east with a maximum of eight per thousand.

With the expansion of the line, the bridge has a noise protection wall 2.0 m high and a slab track with 4.7 m track spacing on the western side . The structure was built between 2006 and 2009 and cost around five million euros.

Cross section of the superstructure

The bridge superstructure consists of a chain of seven single span girders . This means that individual bridge segments can be replaced at a later date and a rail extension is not necessary. Compensation plates were placed over two expansion joints in the middle of the bridge. The cross-sectional shape is a single-cell reinforced concrete box with inclined webs, prestressed in the longitudinal direction . In addition, the deck is prestressed in the transverse direction. The spans are 43.0 m in the two end bays, 44.0 m in the bays in between, with a deck width of 13.3 m and a constant construction height of 4.0 m.

For August 2008, the construction company applied to the Rödental community for permission to work on Sundays, as reworking was still required as part of the removal of defects. The deck of the bridge was a little too high, but this was still within the tolerance range.
