Weißenbrunn vorm Wald is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Rödental in the Coburg district . Since May 1st 1978 the place belongs to Rödental.

geography

The Franconian street village is about 12 kilometers north of Coburg in a small, western side valley of the Itz , through which the Birkertsbach flows. The municipality borders on Thuringia in the east, north and west and on Froschgrundsee in the south-east . The Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line, opened in 2017, with the Froschgrundsee viaduct is located on the southern edge of the municipality.

history

It was first mentioned as "Wizenbrunnen" in 1270. The settlement, also known as "Wyszenbrunn", belonged to the von Schaumberg family from the 13th to the 14th century . In 1358 the von Kemmaten became lords of the manor for 200 years, which was sold to K. von Steinau in 1558. An old castle is documented for 1583. The first church, probably a castle chapel, is dated to 1264. It was originally an own church of the Counts of Wildberg, which from 1285 was under the patronage of the Sonnefeld Monastery .

In 1516, the Sonnefeld monastery in Weißenbrunn owned a farm and two Sölden. Jörg von Schaumberg, Jörg Zentgraf, Veit Kemnater, Peter Kemnater and Christoph von Schaumberg also owned the property.

During the Thirty Years War , the whole village was burned down in 1634 by the troops of General Guillaume de Lamboy . The population decreased from 200 to 102 inhabitants. The church, standing on a small hill, was rebuilt from 1752 to 1754. The von Steinau brothers initiated the neo-classical castle building in the second half of the 18th century. In 1895 it was sold by Otto von Steinau's daughter.

The local poet Heinrich Schaumberger grew up in the schoolhouse built in 1829/30 and worked there from 1869 to 1872 as a teacher and cantor. He called the village Bergheim in his novels. The school, which was closed in 1967, has housed a local history museum since the 1970s, which is also dedicated to the life and work of Schaumberger.

In 1920 Weißenbrunn, previously part of the Free State of Coburg , became Bavarian. After 1945 the inner German border separated the village from its neighboring Thuringian villages. Roth , Almerswind , Emstadt and Truckendorf belonged to the Weißenbrunn parish until then.

Old school

On January 1, 1971, Weißenbrunn vorm Wald merged with the previously independent neighboring communities of Fischbach , Fornbach , Mittelberg , Schönstädt and Waltersdorf to form the new community of Froschgrund . On May 1, 1978, Froschgrund was forcibly absorbed in Rödental.

Place name

The place name means white well and refers to the particularly calcareous water of the Birkertsbach. The addition vorm Wald refers to the situation before the Thuringian Forest , in contrast to the also in Coburg lying Weißenbrunn am Forst .

Attractions

Weißenbrunn sintered terraces
  • The Birkertsbach runs through the entire place. At 400 m along the Mergelgasse, its very calcareous water formed sintered terraces, which are among the most impressive in northeastern Bavaria. The waterfalls, artificially supported at the beginning of the 20th century, overcome a height of 15 m in four stages.
  • The Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church , a simple hall with a pulpit altar, was built from 1752 to 1754 according to plans by the Coburg master mason Brückner based on the margrave style. The core of the late medieval tower has had an octagonal tower with a pointed helmet since 1866.
  • The manor of the von Steinau manors from the 18th century called "Castle". The original building dates from the 13th century.

dialect

Itzgründisch , a Main Franconian dialect , is spoken in Weißenbrunn vorm Wald .
