history

A village on the Röden only emerged in the 19th century at the valley narrow point between Mahnberg and Weinberg from two settlements on both sides of the river. Above the valley, on a stepped terrain, was the Rothine estate, which was mentioned in a document in 1149 in connection with the establishment of the Mönchröden monastery . The founder of the monastery is said to have been a Count Sterker. In 1783, in addition to the monastery, the marble and kabaster quarry was mentioned. One of the two paper mills in the Principality of Coburg was also identified in Mönchröden. From 1858 to 1869 Otto Ludloff was the domain tenant of Mönchröden. In the 19th century, the hamlets of Gnailes , Schafhausen and the Alexandrinenthal factory belonged to Mönchröden.

The former municipality had an area of 3.62 km² in 1961.
