Unterwohlsbach is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Rödental in the Coburg district . On January 1, 1971, Unterwohlsbach belonged to the "founding communities" of Rödental along with the former communities of Einberg , Kipfendorf , Mönchröden , Oeslau and Rothenhof .

geography

Unterwohlsbach is located seven kilometers northeast of Coburg in the Itztal . The right Itz tributary Fornbach flows through the village. The federal road 4 leads north past Unterwohlsbach. The district road CO 17 to Lautertal and a community road to Fornbach begin in Unterwohlsbach.

history

The first documentary mention of Unterwohlsbach was in 1152 as "Wolveswach". The monastery Mönchröden in Unterwohlsbach owned goods and rights . The castle, after which the Counts von Wohlsbach named themselves, was probably nearby. From 1338 the settlement was owned by the Counts of Lossau.

At the beginning of the 14th century Unterwohlsbach was under the rule of the Hennebergers . In 1353 the place with the Coburg Land came by inheritance to the Wettins and was thus part of the Electorate of Saxony from 1485 , from which the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg later emerged.

Between six able-bodied men in 1445 and 13 in 1618 lived in the place.

The Itz mill was operated from 1835 as a mass mill for grinding clay, lime and kaolin . Later it was a cutting mill for the finishing of delivered wood, from which a sawmill developed. In 1845 Unterwohlsbach built a school there together with Oberwohlsbach, which was demolished in 1971.

In a referendum on November 30, 1919, six Unterwohlsbach citizens voted for the Free State of Coburg to join the Thuringian state and 50 against. From July 1, 1920, Fischbach belonged to the Free State of Bavaria .

On April 1, 1928, Rosenau was incorporated into Unterwohlsbach.

On January 1, 1971, Unterwohlsbach merged with the communities of Einberg, Kipfendorf, Mönchröden, Oeslau and Rothenhof to form the unified community of Rödental.

In 1972, more than 4,000 small coins from the 13th century were found during construction work in Unterwohlsbach near an old river crossing.
