Mittelberg is a district of the Upper Franconian town of Rödental in the Coburg district .

geography

Mittelberg is located ten kilometers northeast of Coburg in Froschgrund, east of the Itz at the foot of Mittelberg and Schmidsberg. The left Itz tributary Weimersgraben flows through the village. The state road St 2206 from Rödental to the Thuringian border crosses Mittelberg.

history

The first documentary mention of Mittelberg was in 1340 in the Henneberg Urbarium about the rule of Coburg. The name goes back to the neighboring elevation.

At the beginning of the 14th century, Mittelberg was under the rule of the Henneberger . In 1353 the place with the Coburg Land came by inheritance to the Wettins and was thus part of the Electorate of Saxony from 1485 , from which the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg later emerged. The lords of Schaumberg ruled the village.

Mittelberg has been part of the church district of Weißenbrunn vorm Wald, 4.6 kilometers away, for centuries . Today the place has its own cemetery. In 1816, the mill, which was owned by the Sonnefeld monastery in 1514, was converted into a paper mill on the Itz, from which a paper mill later emerged.

In a referendum on November 30, 1919, two citizens of Mittelberg voted for the Free State of Coburg to join the Thuringian state and 72 against. Thus, from July 1, 1920, Mittelberg belonged to the Free State of Bavaria . In 1925, the 163.94 hectare village had 176 inhabitants, 174 of whom belonged to the Protestant church, and 31 residential buildings.

On January 1, 1971, Mittelberg merged with the towns of Fischbach , Fornbach , Schönstädt , Waltersdorf and Weißenbrunn vorm Wald to form the new Froschgrund community, which was forcibly dissolved on May 1, 1978 and incorporated into the town of Rödental . Since then Mittelberg has been a district of Rödental.

The old school, which closed in 1968 and was previously attended by the students from Fischbach, Mittelberg and Waltersdorf, has been used by the scouts as a conference and training center since 1981 .
