Gnailes is an officially named part of the municipality of the Upper Franconian town of Rödental in the Coburg district .

The former hamlet is at the foot of the Mahnberg on a saddle between the Itz and Röden valleys . Gnailes was mentioned in a document in 1149 as "eciam Schafhusen". The Würzburg bishop Siegfried von Truhendingen confirmed that the newly founded monastery Mönchröden was also given this settlement by Hermann Sterker , Burgrave of Meißen and his brother, Count Sterker. The place name "Gneyles" is first documented for 1516 and is probably based on a field name that can be derived from the Middle High German word knoll for hill. In the 19th century, the mountain village of Gnailes belonged toMönchröden . In 1846 Gnailes and Schafhausen wanted to separate from Mönchröden and form their own community.

In 1925 the settlement consisted of 33 residents and six residential buildings. The school and the Protestant church were in Mönchröden, 1.9 kilometers away . In 1950 there were 35 people living in five apartment buildings in Gnailes. In 1970 there were 32 people.

On January 1, 1971, Mönchröden merged with the communities of Einberg , Kipfendorf , Oeslau , Rothenhof and Unterwohlsbach to form the unified community of Rödental. Since then, Gnailes, which has since been absorbed into new residential areas, has belonged to the city of Rödental.
